DH and I have fallen on some bad Financial Times recently due to a very sick DS. We need home renovations to assist DS which we cannot afford. This week a charity contacted me and will help with the funding. Their offer is both unexpected and incredibly generous.
I know that most give to charities such as this and I wanted to share how life changing this is for us.
We cannot remortgage as DS needs 24 hour care and I had to leave my well paid job. DH lost his well paid job due to Covid and took a lesser paying one to keep us afloat. We cannot get a loan as we only have one real income - I get carers payment but we cannot afford loan repayments,

These renovations mean that DS can use his wheelchair at home. He will be independent as much as possible. I can get nursing and carers to help with his care when he has his own room & bathroom downstairs. We can get a hoist which will stop my constant back ache.

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. Our home will no longer be like a prison for us.

Thank you. DS will never be cured or healthy enough for me to work in his lifetime but I promise when I can I will repay this donation in whatever way that I can.

Do you have good news to share?

Nice to hear some good news for a change. 🙂

It’s a shame you had to leave your well paid job. Could you not go back to it? Or are you the main carer?

OP, I am so pleased for you. I just want to make sure you’ve had all the relevant social care assessments - OT, carers assessment and the relevant assessment for your child depending on their age.

Social care should be funding adaptations to your home if your child is a wheelchair user, but not sure of their age as if they are an adult it’s means tested, but if they are a child it isn’t.

Just want to make sure you’re getting all the help you’re entitled to Flowers

@NoCherryNoDeal I had to leave my job to be his full time carer. It was one of the terms to get him home from hospital. DH is great with DS but he cannot do the medical side of his care . Who knows what the future may hold I would love to go back to work one day. I spent years on my education and career.

@SinkGirl thank you. DS spent almost a year in hospital and as a result he is linked in with the most amazing teams. He has physio, OT, SLT more than once a week. I have social worker, psychologist, and regular check ups with his numerous consultants. In this country these type of works are means tested as a family. We fall well within the means but there is a cap which would only cover a quarter of the costs of the renovations!

Which charity is this Judithand? I am very wary of some big charities now so it would be great to find something worth donating to.
Thanks for sharing your good news.

That is wonderful news but such a shame you've been failed so badly by the government. Please can you post a link to the charity, I'm sure there are a few here who would like to donate Flowers

That’s good, I’m glad you are getting the right support. Our social care OT saved our sanity and prevented a serious accident for our twins with safety beds. They were going to convert our loft too but sadly the roof height is too low so we are looking to move.

Not sure if you’re in England but that’s the only system I know - while there is a cap I know they can use their discretion, so if there are other things you need be insistent!
