I’m prescribed medication for my mental health. I have to pay for this medication and have two items so it’s quite expensive. My gp have now given me two months worth of medication. They psychiatrist however has now said that I should have two weeks worth of medication maximum. This would work out very expensive for me and surely if the gp are willing to give two months worth that’s their professional choice.

The psychiatrist.

Get a prepayment certificate.

LApprentiSorcier · 20/02/2021 10:48

Have you told your GP what the psychiatrist advised?

Ginisatonic · 20/02/2021 10:49

I assume you are talking about NHS prescriptions so I agree get a prepayment card. The psychiatrist trumps the GP on this.

Expensive76 · 20/02/2021 10:50

The psychiatrist will be writing to the GP. Thank you I’ve not heard of pre payment card what sort of price at they?

Prepayment card doesn't normally save you money till on 3 medications... So every 2 weeks rather than every 2 months if all on seperate prescriptions will presumably cost significantly more

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 20/02/2021 10:53

The prepayment less than £11 a month, way cheaper than 2 prescriptions. Definitely worth having

Expensive76 · 20/02/2021 10:54

I usually have them both on one proscription every two months. Which is £18 so not too bad but every two weeks would be an awful lot of money.

I have 6 prescriptions per month which is really expensive if I pay per prescription. I’ve got the prepayment plan, you can do it for a year (around £120), or for three months, and you can have limitless prescriptions during the year. Well worth it.

Oh hello again. Your psychiatrist has limited the medicine you have access to for good reason. Please listen to them.

Niconacotaco · 20/02/2021 10:56

You can have them on one prescription but dispensed every two weeks - check with your pharmacist but I think you only pay per prescription, not per dispensing. The GP has to ask for this on the prescription.

Mabelface · 20/02/2021 10:56

I'm currently on 5 lots of meds and the prepayment certificate saves me loads. You can do it online easily.

Expensive76 · 20/02/2021 10:57

I’ve never posted here before. I’ve only recently got access to NHS mental health services. I was paying for a private counsellor before.

The psychiatrist is advising this because he's worried about you having a stockpile of medication in the house and also so that he can adjust your dose easier.
His advice is the best for you from a safety and medical pov.
The GP has offered to do the longer scripts to save you money and the GP work. Its a practical solution which saves you time and money but at a potential risk to your physical health.
Neither is wrong, but if you can afford to listen to the psychiatrist do so.

OP as kindly as I can you have several very obvious tells. You've posted on here so many times about this.
poptartqueen · 20/02/2021 11:07

The psychiatrist. Also the views of the GP and the psychiatrist are both worth many times more than random people on MN.

I have a pre payment card it’s 11 quid a month. Saves me a fortune. I would highly recommend it. Just apply online. services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/buy-prescription-prepayment-certificate/start
