Fucking joke. There should be an appeal to lengthen the sentence.

This makes it even more incomprehensible, @lifeturnsonadime.

Entrenched misogyny is the only explanation.

Men kill their partners more than 8 times more than women do. In at least 77% of cases where women kill their partners, there is a history of abuse: www.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/13/justice-is-failing-women-forced-to-kill-male-abusers-to-stay-alive

Harriet Wistrich says that there have been at least 20 unsafe murder convictions when women have killed their partners in that period.

Women murder. Men snap.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/02/2021 17:47

Why the fuck and a 'loss of control' sufficient reason to give someone manslaughter instead of murder when they intended to kill the person?
In a civilised society I can swallow genuine diminished responsibity (don't believe that was the case here and two different psychiatrists who were witnesses at the trial disagreed as to whether he could legitimately claim this) but loss of control? That appears to basically be saying that if you're angry enough it's ok? Unless it's interpreted in a different way in practice?

ghostyslovesheets · 18/02/2021 17:48

astonishing how many women have struggled through lockdown (and many many men) and not resorted to killing their other half - awful

Clymene · 18/02/2021 18:24

According to Julie Bindel on twitter, they never went anywhere or did anything. She did all the cooking and cleaning and wifework, even though she also worked.

I read an account of the trial which said 'he never left her side'. I'm sure it was meant to imply utter devotion but it chilled me to the bone.

Agree utterly devoted men do not snap and kill their wives. Lockdown is no excuse.

The sentence is a disgrace. Apparently it is worse to lie on a form when you return to the UK about where you have been (10 year sentence) than it is to kill your wife.

I can't believe that 10% on here think this sentence is OK.

CheesyMother · 18/02/2021 19:25

Regardless of whether you think the diminished responsibility defence should have been accepted or not, you can still be sentenced to life imprisonment for manslaughter.

5 years is shocking. He will be out in 2.5, most likely.

@SoVery

You have to prove INTENT to murder. Not something that happened purely as a result of his actions.
I thought there was something about could most people forsee their actions may result in death? Most people would think strangling someone with a dressing gown cord might kill them. 🤷‍♀️

Sentence is a joke.

Apparently his daughter stuck up for him and said it wasn’t like him. Funny thing a lot of wife killers, or even general murderers are nice people when they’re not killing people.

The butcher who murdered Libby Squires was married with a small child, people who knew him thought he was a nice guy. So I’m not surprised the daughter here thinks her dad is a nice bloke.
