Diet to reduce weight and chances of GDM

BigMomma164 · 17/02/2021 20:41

Shamelessly posting for traffic
1 month until I ttc again
Still 1 stone overweight that I want to lose before ttc
Last pregnancy I became diabetic in the last week of pregnancy!
I've been trying to look for diets / eating plans that would help me lose weight AND start eating foods that would reduce my chances of diabetes again
There are too many choices - Do I low carb / low calories / keto / IF / fast 800
Any suggestions or help welcome

I’m doing a combination of all the above. Under 10g sugar, Under 10g carbs, under 800 calories a day. Lost a stone in 4 weeks.

5:2 (although I tend to do alternating 4:3 then 5:2 weeks) work for me.

Be warned though that it just happens to some people. I was very overweight for my two pregnancies (obviously I don’t recommend that!) and no diabetes at all.

Two very healthy people I know got GD fairly early on.

Just prepare yourself that it may happen again and know it’s not your fault.

But keto all the way.

Gestationaldiabetes.co.uk has an eating plan that is low carb. You could do that and then carry it on safely in pregnancy.

Definitely low carb for GD prevention - you are trying to stop blood sugar spikes that can increase your insulin resistance. You need to check out the bootcamps that @BIWI runs!

I use calorie counting, but I've had a perfect BMI and been very fit for both of my pregnancies and last time I was diagnosed as soon as they started testing at 12 weeks - so it might not help.

There's a really good book called The Pancreatic Oath. You measure your blood sugar after meals and avoid any foods that make it go too high. It's hard work but I lost a lot of weight when I stuck to it. I've switched to Slimming World long-term as it's easier but it helped me learn to avoid certain foods that spike my blood sugar.
