My 2 year old son has this on his big toe, it first showed up a few days ago and I assumed it was a blister and that his shoes were getting too small and he just needed new shoes, I also checked for any stones or anything in his recently worn shoes and there's nothing.

It disappeared for a couple of days but has come back today and he hasn't worn any shoes as we've not been out in the last 2 days. It isn't hot to the touch, isn't leaking anything, he's walking normally and allows me to touch it so I don't think it's causing him discomfort.

I also suspected a splinter but surely he'd show some discomfort and I've shined a torch against it and can't see anything in the skin.
I'm going to take him to the pharmacy tomorrow and hopefully they'll be able to take a look at it and give some advice.

Has anyone else had this? Do I need to take him to the doctors?

It could be a chilblain especially if it went away and came back again.

Do you have cold floors?

If it spreads or feels hot you should see a gp asap as it could be an infection.

SharpLily · 17/02/2021 19:44

My husband had something like this and it was cellulitis. Get him to the doctor, just in case.

Covid toe?

SomewhereUpMyArse · 17/02/2021 19:48

If you need medical advice you should see a doctor. I think you need medical advice.

RaidersoftheLostAardvark · 17/02/2021 19:51

I'd call the GP (not right now, unless he is unwell). Hard to say what it is & needs properly looked at.

@User0ne we just moved into a new house that has freezing cold floors! This could be it. I don't know what a chilblain is so I'll look it up now. I'll still take him to see someone tomorrow just to be safe.

I second @Dinocan it could be covid toe as I think they are chilblain like

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 17/02/2021 19:59

@Dinocan @PammieDooveOrangeJoof none of our household has any covid symptoms or has had any contact with anyone who's had a positive test but I'll call the doctors first thing tomorrow morning. I was originally going to take him to the pharmacy in the morning but I don't want to risk it now just in case and I'll ask the doctors advice over the phone.

Chillblains... I have a thread about them. DS has been plagued for the last 3 weeks- his feet have looked awful- and exactly like that but also swollen in some places.

Bit of a mystery how he’s got them, as although it’s been cold, he has thermal socks and snowboots/lined wellies for outdoor, and thick soles slippers indoors. Nevertheless... chillblains.

Very thick cotton socks under the thermal welly liners and moisturising his feet at night have helped.

AnaisNun · 17/02/2021 20:03

DS has tested negative for covid multiple times since Christmas btw- most recently when I tested him in case it was in fact, covid toe.

@AnaisNun I have noticed his feet looked dry lately. I think Chilblains might be the culprit, our floors are so cold.

I've just ordered him some new slippers online so hopefully they arrive in a few days, he does have some at the moment that he wears but they're more the grippy sock slipper type things and don't really keep his feet warm properly. I'll also start moisturising his feet more often and we're looking for a big rug for the dining room to take the chill off the floor and insulate it a bit so hopefully these efforts will make a difference.

In the meantime I'll try putting a couple of pairs of socks underneath his current slippers and see if that helps until his new ones arrive.

@NeedCoffeeToSurvive

If it makes you feel any better, our lovely GP was 100% unworried about DS - said there's no lasting damage at all likely, and chillblains are hugely unlikely to signify any "underlying" cause without other symptoms (they can be linked to circulation issues etc) - and it's just been a horribly cold snap we've had recently - particularly for tender little feet - most likely they'll go now the weather's getting milder.

They can crack as they dry out/skin peels and you can get secondary infections though if they "split" - so just keep an eye on that.

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 17/02/2021 21:32

@AnaisNun thank you! I think this is most likely the cause, we just moved into a house with hard flooring throughout the whole ground floor and I'm pretty sure there's no insulation underneath it so it's freezing! Like standing on ice, we've had a few nights of -5°c temperatures and below outside so that's probably caused it.

I'll double up his socks until his new slippers arrive and try to keep his feet warm and moisturised. I'll keep a close eye on it for any signs of infection, he has no other health issues or circulation problems thankfully.

Hopefully the weather will start warming up soon, its been such a cold winter this year.
I hope your little ones feet get better soon too!
