Sudden craze/ misuse for CCTV

AIBU sudden misuse of cctv:

I currently have 6 cctvs pointed at my house. Front sides and back.
I live in a very safe place in the U.K. and on a street with houses to the side back and front. 0 crime here.
Now, since the pandemic most my neighbours have got cctv.
I know people feel vulnerable atm but mounting a 360 camera so you see your neighbours irises is a bit much!
I cannot shake the feeling of being watched (especially with the moving cameras !!) and also time to time worry who’s watching us and why. Also having the footage that I can not control of my child who is 2.

AIBU?
I’m quite normal and boring, none threatening and live a quite lifestyle. So no idea why my house is so interesting. Cameras are not protecting their properties as way over shoot beyond more so mine :)

It’s not a police matter. Just more an evolution of the times I guess. And no I cannot plant hedges as Cameras are mounted high. I did ask one neighbour to which a “No” it’s not against the law was issued against me. Also they will not blank my garden Out.

Anyone having this ? Or am I alone?

Just want to add I really get why ppl have cctv but I feel suddenly people are pointing them into ppls gardens knowing there are no laws against it.

It’s not illegal, but it might not be reasonable
There can be other issues

ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-using-cctv/

It’s legal to film a public place, and to overshoot private property, but it’s illegal to cross the line of where you can expect privacy

converseandjeans · 16/02/2021 23:43

Those ring bell camera things are popular. So along with all the zoom/Teams lessons and meetings some people are being filmed 24/7. George Orwell's book seems rather true to life. I don't know how we got to this.

MissMarpleDarling · 16/02/2021 23:55

My relative has them out the front, back and in the house I used to love going round and watching the neighbours on their cctv 😂 if it was my neighbour I'd not like it

Fortheloveofdogs44 · 17/02/2021 07:10

I guess my only wish would be that you can only record your property. But alas the goverment wants us to be curtain twitchers... now with HD and sound ....

Voyeurism. As there mounted high up Id report To police that you Fear they might be peeping in your windows watching you undress. A visit from the local police will make them point it a different way.

DinosaurDigestive · 17/02/2021 17:45

I have a camera which I was advised to get due to crazy amounts of harassment and a very abusive ex... it follows movements outside as it is needed to provide evidence so if anything happens - yet again - charges can be made as there will be proper evidence. Not just my word type thing.

Some others beside me have them in their back gardens due to sheds with valuable items in them and also due to a field behind and local drug users etc. Also possibly a number of different reasons which could be similar to mine.

There are no issues surrounding mine and not illegal at all. As long as there is a sticker or sign displayed on the window or wherever it is clearly stating that there is CCTV.

Ring doorbells are everywhere and capture a lot also.

CCTV cameras are everywhere in shops and streets so it is part of society now. So I wouldn't worry too much about your two year old.

Cameras help to protect people and their properties and help provide evidence needed and also helps give vital reassurance to others.

DinosaurDigestive · 17/02/2021 17:45

Then you have dash cams also. They are everywhere and again prove very helpful as well

WhereDoMyBluebirdsFly · 17/02/2021 17:49

It feels dystopian doesn't it? I don't understand why some people have cameras inside their houses that film all day long, or Alexas that listen to every word they say. I hope I die before the machines gain sentience. Smile

I’d get one just to record bloody parcel force playing knock a door run with my fucking parcels. I’m not particularly fussed by being recorded by other people, it’s just part and parcel of modern life.

parietal · 17/02/2021 18:08

if the cameras are capturing your front garden & street, it would be hard to do much about it.

if some of the cameras capture your back garden where you would expect things to be private, then I would complain. Look up the ICO links that someone posted above to check what your rights are.

Fortheloveofdogs44 · 17/02/2021 18:26

It’s true. Being filmed and having less and less privacy is increasing and there is not much we can do about it apart from accept that’s life going forward.

Nobody wants to watch me sat in the sofa on Mumsnet & drinking tea I’m sure but I cannot have my blinds up without a camera facing my windows. Funnily It doesn’t bother my DH,just me.

Interestingly it seems cameras are getting cheaper And easier to install. I can imagine if a neighbour hasn't got one yet, they will do soon.

I do not mind ring doorbells as they are not obvious as such. For me I’ll have to get use to less privacy that I had before.

I just foresee a lot of issues with cctv coming very soon ! Or maybe it’s just me haha take me back to 1984.....

Just to add I think for me it was quite shock as a lot neighbours only recently all seem to get them installed during pandemic. Prior to that I hadn’t really seen / noticed cctv on as many houses as I do now, even on my walks.

That is horrible and would bother me too. Well done for speaking to you neighbour, hopefully it got them thinking. I don't know if it's allowed or not (I really hope it isn't!) but just wanted to say you are not alone and NBU.

I agree there are cameras pretty much everywhere and that's just the way it works now but surely we all agree that being filmed in your private garden is slightly different than being filmed on the street, shop or a bus!?

z0fl0ra · 18/02/2021 12:47

got an ad for CCTV on this Confused we’re all definitely being watched and listened to more and more and there’s nothing we can do about it!
