Yet more MAM advertising on Mumsnet

Yet again it's pretending to be breastfeeding support in "Feeding diaries: a week in the life of a breastfeeding mum". www.mumsnet.com/babies/baby-feeding-diary-breastfeeding-mum MNHQ when are you going to actually ask an impartial breastfeeding counsellor or IBCLC to talk about breastfeeding rather than WHO code violators?

Is it really that big a deal? I expressed sometimes too and got the medela bottles which he didn't really like. So I got some tommee tippie ones. WHO code is aimed at poor countries where bottles can't be safely sterilised.

Bert2e · 16/02/2021 19:03

The WHO code is there to protect all babies no matter where they live or how they are fed. Part of the code determines the safe formulation of formula.

What's the issue with MAM? I couldn't breastfeed, my son was born during a pandemic and no one was allowed to touch me to help me. The hospital shrugged their shoulders and pushed me to use formula. My son is now thriving, companies like MAM and Tommy Tippee saved his life tbh. He was losing weight drastically on expressed milk and bf attempts.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/02/2021 19:32

A fed baby is best. No matter how that is. I don't get the issue.

Griselda1 · 16/02/2021 19:37

I totally agree with you, breast feeding needs to be supported in every way possible.

I would say that women need to be supported in every way possible.

^^This!

Griselda1 · 16/02/2021 20:13

Women need to be supported in every way possible, as does breast feeding. Commercialism shouldn't enter into feeding choices.

Skysblue · 16/02/2021 20:18

Mumsnet wasn’t set up as a neutral forum for mum chat. It exists to make its owners money.

firstimemamma · 16/02/2021 20:19

Yanbu op, I hate it. I've got nothing against FF and am all for it but I just wish it was a straight-up FF advert, not an advert that implies that breastfeeding should go hand-in-hand with all this MAM stuff because it really doesn't have to.

Tier500 · 16/02/2021 20:21

Of course women should be supported in their feeding choices, and there’s nothing wrong with MAM in itself, or formula feeding (obviously!), but it’s weird to say the least to have a breastfeeding section sponsored by a company that makes bottles and dummies. Pretty big conflict of interest there.

Why not have MAM talking about formula feeding?

BlackRibboner · 16/02/2021 20:23

I voted YANBU because it's an awful article. But I see nothing wrong with putting combi feeding out there as a choice, or with manufacturers of baby equipment advertising on a parenting website.

Branleuse · 16/02/2021 20:24

if you dont like the adverts and you use mumsnet a lot, then you could maybe consider the premium version, so they become less reliant on all the adverts. I

GreenSlide · 16/02/2021 20:25

Mam bottles are brilliant for anyone considering using them. Sorted DS's windy tum right out when he was little.

Ileflottante · 16/02/2021 20:28

Even breastfed babies drink out of bottles occasionally? Confused

But yes, I agree with the sentiment that women need to be informed and supported, not just those that are successful at breastfeeding.

xHeidiHix · 16/02/2021 20:33

Don't see what the issue is. Not all breastmilk is fed directly from the breast. I give my baby breastmilk from my breast and I express using a MAM pump and feed using MAM bottles. No formula here but I wouldn't have been able to feed breast milk to my baby for so long had I not had products available to enable me to express. Also use MAM dummies and storage pots...

So MAM supporting breastfeeding is brilliant in my opinion.

DinkyDiggies · 16/02/2021 20:34

Yanbu... but only because I detest sneaky advertorials and always have.
Advertise the product, fine, (and I actually like the MAM products), but dress it up as a poorly written blog pretending to care about breastfeeding, no not fine.

BrumBoo · 16/02/2021 20:38

I'm also a tad confused, bottle fed doesn't necessarily mean not breastmilk feed?

As someone who has BF two for 18 month each, and looking to do so again soon, I also believe fed is best. It's really not a big deal, women choose to make an informed decision as to what's best for the baby and themselves.

NotFabulousDarling · 16/02/2021 21:28

I have been BF for the past 18 months and counting.

Right now, I am 300 miles away from my baby. I don't want to be. I am pumping (into a bottle which I keep in an electric cool box) and he is drinking (from a bottle) and sucking on a dummy (his favourite is his MAM one). Hmm

The support I got on Mumsnet when we had problems is the ONLY support I've been able to access. Because I got that support, I am still feeding a year (and a NC) later. That support is paid for by sponsored posts and advertising.

He wouldn't still be breastfeeding if Carobel didn't exist. Carobel is made by Cow and Gate. All this breast vs formula drama needs to shove off and people need to work on supporting women breastfeeding in any way they choose (combination feeding, exclusive breastfeeding, pumping or exclusive pumping) instead of tearing apart the alternative and silencing any mention of it. What are YOU doing to support women breastfeeding right now OP? Would your time be better spent doing that if you feel so strongly about it?

The WHO code is there to protect all babies no matter where they live or how they are fed.
Except the WHO is actively discouraging food banks from collecting/giving out formula under the guise of "supporting breastfeeding".

I'd have a lot more to say but I need to go and pump again.

NotFabulousDarling · 16/02/2021 21:30

*And I never would have heard of Carobel or known how to advocate to get it prescribed if it wasn't for MN.

Bert2e · 17/02/2021 10:08

@NotFabulousDarling more hours than you could ever imagine over many, many years supporting breastfeeding in a voluntary capacity! Picking up the slack where health care professionals have failed families because our government has failed to provide adequate resources to allow them to do their job properly.

With reference to food banks and formula the reason food banks are encouraged not to hand out formula is due to both supply and safety issues. Food banks cannot guarantee supplies of formula so it is unethical to hand it out to families and not be able to guarantee a 1 year supply for that baby. Families may also lack the facilities to make formula up safely. Families in need can access free formula via their local authority and food bank staff should recieve training on how to refer families.
