AIBU to ask how often you chase your username, and why?

I'm just about to change my username AGAIN! And wondered how often everyone else does?

For the first 10/12 years when we were young and innocent, I had the same user name. Well except for when we did the Secret Santas.

However for the last 5 or so years, I tend to change it every month or so. The main reason is because of security, you don't realise how much personal stuff you give away, even by changing names and ages of kids etc.

So when was the last time you changed?

@HereForThePopcorn I've accidentally used different names on a thread before. Assume Mnet don't care if it's obviously an accident!

Sock puppeting would only be deleted if it was
used deceptively.

It's so annoying when you post on an thread with an "old" username then you accidentally post on a thread you have created with your "new" username.

You see it all the time, gets really confusing sometimes, especially as you can't then use the filter option.

Yes it's true. If it's innocent and harmless, they may ignore it. Sometimes though they don't notice unless someone suspects something and reports.

support yourself that'll get you into trouble if someone notices and reports.
But I am sure people do it accidentally without intent and it goes unnoticed.

My first user name was potentially identifiable, so I changed it last March (at the start of lockdown 1, pretty guessable!).
I have a single "namechange" name that I revert to on occasions that I want to write about something very personal, but other than that it hadn't occurred to me to change it regularly.
Maybe something less hibernation like when lockdown ends!

I've accidentally sock puppeted a few times.
Just remembered I made this username for a thread about sock puppets. For the record I posted above as Juo

Depends how much I start threads. Maybe every 3/4 threads or if I've shared a lot of info on different replies on others posts.

I've only had one thread where someone decided to state they checked my posting history. Plus one where someone said they knew my real name. Even if not true it's a bit unnerving. I know people want to check for trolls, but they end up hunting the wrong people just because they tried to change some info to not be outed.
