AIBU to think if the mini pill caused me to bleed constantly, Mirena will too?

Because it is the same hormone, just less of it right? Whenever I ask this to a nurse or doctor, they just tell me no because “it acts directly on the lining of the womb”. I don’t understand why that makes any difference though and no one seems to be able to explain it to me. I’d like to go for Mirena as I am 40 and still on the combined pill due to bleeding constantly on the mini pilI, but don’t want to go through the whole fitting of a coil of I end up bleeding constantly again. am low risk on the combined pill due to being healthy weight, non smoker etc but I still know getting off the combined pill would be better.

Did anyone bleed a lot on the mini pill but Mirena was fine?

I bled so much on the mini pill that I had to have an iron infusion. Had the Mirena and did still have irregular bleeding but nothing like on the mini pill alone.
Then I took them both together and it solved it.

Minerva I bled heavily for months.. i was told it would settle ... it dud not.. after several infusions it was removed after I practically begged ..

never again ...

Im glad Im 51 🌺

I bled constantly and heavily on the mini pill. On my second mirena now, and haven't had a period in over 6 years. It's fantastic...

Bled constantly on the mini pill and turned into a hormonal nightmare witch woman. Worst part was I knew how utterly awful I was being but it was like I was floating above my body and couldn't stop the crying/hysterics/rage. Awful.

Two years into the mirena being fitted now and I love it. No periods (save some light bleeding after it was initially fitted), no hormonal rages, no weight gain, skin is fine etc etc. Obviously everyone is different but in answer to your original question, no, just because you bled on the mini pill it doesn't always follow that you'll bleed on the mirena. I'll definitely be getting another one when this one runs out (or, you know, if I finally meet someone worth taking the out for in which case I'll get one put in as soon as I've had another baby Wink)

For context: Depo also stopped my periods and I was fine with that side effects wise as well but had to stop having it simply because I'd been on it too long and the gp was worried about osteoporosis, can't take the combined pill due to migraines and the idea of the implant makes me feel all squeamish (something about being able to feel it in your arm 🤢). Mirena is definitely my favourite, in it goes, forget about it for five years all being well.

I've been on the mini pill for 4yrs and haven't had any bleeding during this time. It's fab!

Hello, I know this is ages after you posted but am in same boat as you were - constant bleeding on cerazette. I was advised to try it after non stop heavy bleeding 6 months after my boy was born l. I’ve been on it almost 2 months and got awful mood swings, cramps etc which I didn’t have before. I’m booked for hysteroscopy next week to investigate after a scan showed thickened lining and sure they will suggest putting in the mirena but I’m petrified it will cause more of the same or worse. How has your experience been with the mirena considering you were bleeding on cerazette?

Sarah180818 · 02/08/2022 16:04

I bled every

PARunnerGirl · 18/08/2022 21:22

I just saw this @Ant102 ! I decided not to go on Mirena because neither the doctor or the nurse could explain why I wouldn’t bleed in the same way as I did on the mini pill, given the similarity of the hormones. I went back on Microgynon for a bit (I’m early 40s, but I am fit and active, a healthy weight and a non-smoker so the doctor was fine with it), but now I am off all hormonal contraception and we are just using condoms.

I had near constant bleeding on the implant but no periods at all with Mirena, but it did make me feel really low at points in my cycle - like throwing myself under a bus. So I now have the copper coil and my periods are heavier but overall it suits me the best out of the three

OhForGoodnessSake1 · 18/08/2022 21:56

I had to work through multiple minipills before I found one which didn't give me constant bleeding. And periods were still heavy and painful (endometriosis). Mirena was wonderful! it took about 6 months to settle down but once it did, light periods and I didn't have to stuff super-strong painkillers. When the Mirena got towards the end of its life (over 4 years), the bleeding started to get worse again, so I would recommend making sure you get it replaced at not over 4 years.

Watchthesunrise · 18/08/2022 21:58

Copper coil, without hormones at all, is a perfectly workable and effective option.

I don't get heavy bleeds with mine?

I was never comfortable with the idea of extra hormones.

whirlyswirly · 18/08/2022 22:45

Same here, hormonal contraception if any kind has always been awful for me but the copper coil is great. No change in periods, I like knowing what my natural cycle is.

Thanks for replying. I’ve been spotting constantly and literally just started bleeding 2 weeks after last heavier bleed that was like a period. I just don’t think I can carry on with this. I have to be on some sort of pill as I went on it to stop constant bleeding (had a hysteroscopy a 9 days ago and there was nothing obvious causing it and it may be body adjusting after birth (I’m 8 months post partum). The gynaecologist said I could switch to the combined if the bleeding issues carried on. Can I ask how did you make the switch! Did you stop the mini pill then start microgynon or did you have a period of being on both pills for a bit? I know if I stop the cerazette I’ll have a heavier bleed initially. I would love to be on nothing but would most likely get non stop bleeding but heavier

PARunnerGirl · 19/08/2022 08:44

@Ant102 Hi Ant- I’m pretty sure I just went straight onto the combined pill with no break. I definitely didn’t take both at the same time. I loved Microgynon 😆I only had spotting during the week break and just always felt good on it. The only reason I decided to come off it was to give my body the chance to go through perimenopause/ menopause naturally when the time comes.

I was on microgynon for years with no issues but then started to get really painful
Periods. It was masking endometriosis.

I now have the mirena and have no periods and am pain free. So another positive vote for mirena here.

Ant102 · 19/08/2022 09:02

@PARunnerGirl thanks so much for quick reply! Speaking to GP today. I’m 39 so also very aware of the age thing but also healthy / non smoker etc. I was on combined pill in my late 20s and early 30s. I would love to just have some control over my cycle - to just bleed for 1 week a month would be amazing after all this daily spotting/ bleeding!
