To ask about montelukast for asthma

I’m phoning GP tomorrow to discuss my asthma plan and he usually discusses the option of taking montelukast. Obviously will get advice from him tomorrow but can anyone here say what taking montelukast is like; did it help and were there any side effects? I currently take fostair and ventolin if required. Have started to get very mild nosebleeds in the last few months which I have read is a side effect of inhalers. Does anyone else get this?
I have adult onset asthma.
Thanks!

Worked really well for my daughter for a year, then she came off it. It was the only thing that controlled it for awhile. We only gave it for short periods of time. Last year we gave it to her again and it caused Alice in Wonderland Syndrome. Basically visual disturbances that make body parts or people look small for short periods of time. It was awful, really distressed her and us. We thought she could have a brain tumour. Nearly a year down the track (after less than a week's dosage) she still gets it occasionally but hopefully it is almost gone.

I was on this recently for 8 weeks and I came off it due to severe side effects. It is a miracle drug if it works for you but if it doesn't the side effects are very bad. Research it well and decide what you think before going on it.

When I came off it the consultant was not surprised by the side effects I had at all and said its not great for adults.

Thebig3 · 15/02/2021 12:17

Sorry that should say not great for SOME adults

FitterHappierMoreProductive · 15/02/2021 13:05

No experience of it as an adult, but took my toddler off it due to side effects. The dr had warned us some people have them and to switch to taking it in the morning if that happened- but he continued to have the night terrors and tantrums. So I stopped it, and they stopped.

To be honest, if I’d read up on it beforehand, I’d never have given it him.

My husband used to get really severe asthma every winter, despite being on beclometasone (so many chest infections we had an emergency supply of antibiotics and steroids on hand) He's been on montelukast for about 20 years, and even his salbutamol inhalers have gone out of date, they're so seldom used. No side effects that we've noticed, but you do need blood tests to check liver function.

Athinginitself · 15/02/2021 13:10

I've been on it for last year alongside Symbicort, its definitely helped and no side effects.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/02/2021 13:13

Amazing for me. I went from barely controlled asthma even with the stronger seretide to it being well controlled. Zero side effects for the last 8+ years.

MySocalledLoaf · 15/02/2021 13:18

My children took it without side-effects but it didn’t work either. Where I live they stopped prescribing it for children last year because of the class action in the UK.

MySocalledLoaf · 15/02/2021 13:18

USA I meant

DazedandConcerned · 15/02/2021 13:20

I’ve been having an ongoing exasperation since July and was out on Montelukast about a month ago.

My husband reports I now talk in my sleep and am having vivid dreams. However, I do not remember them. I was warned about psychosis and nightmares. I think it’s a coin flip. It works for me but not for everyone.

Clinical side my asthma wakes me less in the night but it hasn’t stopped my issues.

timeisnotaline · 15/02/2021 13:22

This is a bit eye opening. My 5yo has been on it for a few months - I don’t think he’s taking it now. It didn’t make any difference to the asthma- I might post about that separately tbh after reading this thread. No noticeable side effects but he’s not dry at nights anyway, has always had nose bleeds and moods/tantrums!

PugInTheHouse · 15/02/2021 13:23

My DS age 15 takes it, he has mild asthma but the steroid inhaler gives him a permanent cough so he was prescribed montelukast. He would constantly have to keep clearing his throat before he was prescribed it and it's really helped to cure this. We were told to keep an eye on his for any depression/changes in his mental health.

Dalyesque · 15/02/2021 14:33

Had it for over 2 years and also antihistamines. No longer feel any effects of asthma which is great. Not using inhalers at all. No side effects as far as I know.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 15/02/2021 14:37

DD took it and it had very damaging effects on her mental health- depression, it was a nightmare.
This was years ago now before the side effects were common knowledge.
Had I known I would have never given it to her.
I do understand for some people it is life changing in a good way but I think you need to understand the potential side effects to make an informed decision.
Like I said I would have never given it to her and still have pangs of guilt over what it did to her.

Montelukast has made a huge difference to my asthma. I was diagnosed at 29 and started Montelukast at 30. I also take Fostair 100/6.

Every so often someone takes me off it or there is a delay with my prescription being delivered. My asthma worsens in days of not having it.
