So I'm 26. Got my belly button pierced at maybe 15. I took the bar out about 7 years ago and have always had the piercing hole still there but never connected from both sides (the bar can't go through all the way )... now I shower every other day, I'm clean... but I can smell my piercing sometimes and can push yellow crap out of either side of the hole... is this just me? If someone has had it, what did you do to stop it?

It's not infected and is perfectly normal. The fistula inside is still formed and it's just a collection of dead skin cells etc.

It doesn't need any special attention, leave alone as much as possible.

reservoircats · 14/02/2021 22:00

Normal OP. Got mine done at 16, never really healed properly and took it out less than a year after. The bottom hole is sealed but the top is still "open" and every now and again I can squish stuff through it but it's not infected or sore or open, it's just built up dead tissue.

confusednortherner · 14/02/2021 22:01

I seen something on tv where a lady was getting her belly button piercing repaired by a plastic surgeon to stop similar issues. He sort of removed the tube of skin and stitched it up.

earthyfire · 14/02/2021 22:02

I had mine pierced at 19, took it out when I was about 23 as it was done badly, the gaps between each hole was too narrow so it always hurt. 42 now and it's healed with tiny scar so nothing comes out of it.

earthyfire · 14/02/2021 22:03

Gap* / space

Garman · 14/02/2021 22:04

That doesn't sound normal at all, I have mine pierced for 19 years, took the bar out 5 years ago and never had anything like that 🤢

Everyone heals very differently. Sometimes well healed piercings can close up after a day without jewellery. Other times I've helped reinsert jewellery in navel piercings that haven't worn jewellery in 10+ years.

My earring holes are a bit weird coz I stopped wearing earrings since masks came in. Got sick of the gold backs flying off when I removed the mask.

Northernsoullover · 14/02/2021 22:12

Those of you who say yours is nothing like that, try a little experiment.. with a cotton bud press from the underside and see if anything comes out of the top. I do this from time to time and there is usually some gunk in there. I find it satisfying but I am a sporner.

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 14/02/2021 22:17

Oh yes, normal. As other say just dead skin accumulation. You’ve reminded me to go and have a go at mine. Mmm.

Garman · 14/02/2021 22:19

@Northernsoullover I've checked mine in the past to make sure there's nothing wrong with it, infected, etc, nothing at all ever comes out, thankfully!

QuestionEverythingOrBeASheep · 14/02/2021 22:27

It's an easy fix. Options that are natural and will all work on the infection.

  1. Warm water add sal, dunk a cotton wool ball into the water, press out most of the water and pop the cotton wool ball in your belly button. Use plasters in a cross shape to keep ball in overnight. Do this each night until it's cleared.
  2. Do the Above but with a diluted colloidal silver, Or you can use a spray bottle and spray it 3 x a day until healed.
  3. As above If there is no open wound the above with a 10% concentrations of ACV apple cider vinegar with Mother.

The above has quickly solved any problem like this i've every had without drugs.

ShakespearesSisters · 14/02/2021 22:43

Mine is the same. My daughter takes great delight in giving it a squeeze when I let her. Shin cells shed, they are just shedding in the hole so build up in there.

Coolerthanapolarbearstoenails · 14/02/2021 22:43

It's completely normal. My old nipple piercing does it and I haven't had a bar in for at least 10 years.

You live and learn Grin

MidnightHangingTree · 14/02/2021 22:45

I've got an old belly button piercing and that never smells or has gunk but I also have my ear cartilage pierced and that definitely has a bit of a smell and produces stuff... definitely not infected and has been pierced for years. I wonder why some do it and not others?!

MizMoonshine · 14/02/2021 22:46

Entirely normal. Both nipples and ears are like this. Lip and nose holes sealed up completely.

BungleandGeorge · 14/02/2021 22:50

I have one piercing that weeps and one that doesn’t. It also gets sore and slightly swollen though, there’s nothing in either of them so not sure why one is prone to getting infections

thehorsealreadybolted · 14/02/2021 23:30

I get this too. I like it

PivotPivotPivottt · 14/02/2021 23:33

I haven't had a bar in mine for about 10 years and this sometimes happens to me I hate it it makes me feel sick (I hate anything that involves pus I don't understand sporners 🤮). I also occasionally get an itchy spot near the piercing a bit like a heat spot it disappears after about 10/20 minutes.

Taylrse · 14/02/2021 23:35

I took my belly bar out around 5 years ago and the hole is still there.
Every once in a while I push a bar through and gross stuff gets pushed out which smells.

RileyG73 · 14/02/2021 23:47

No piercing, but my toddler sniffed my bellybutton and declared it smells funny

Savethewhales · 15/02/2021 03:21

If it was red, inflamed, itching or sore and oozing pus then that would be cause for concern. If its not then it's just sweat and old skin.

NiceGerbil · 15/02/2021 03:32

I've got about 11 holes in my ears that I haven't worn earrings in for about 15 years.

They still have stinky gunk come out sometimes.

Sorry OP.

Wandavision · 15/02/2021 03:33

It's just a build up of sweat, sebum and soap worms (that's probably not the technical term 😂). Mine does the same! And my nose piercing used to get really smelly 🤢 which was even more awesome as it was up my actual nose (no shit Sherlock!).

theblackparade · 15/02/2021 04:22

It’s not a cyst or an infection, old piercings can just go a bit gross sometimes. Clean it with salt water - rubbing alcohol and TCP are too harsh for it.
