Is it just the places I am looking at or have prices gone sky-high? Week at a Parkdean holiday park in Devon last summer £2,080, this year £3,180!!

I'm hoping to do 'friendcations' later in the year. We have friends who moved to a Scottish island last year that we've been waiting to see, my sister moved to greece at Christmas and we have friends that we were due to see in the Lake District but had to cancel. So hopefully one or more of them will be possible.

Last Feb half term we stayed in a nice 3 bed cottage in north Norfolk very near Burnham Market for about £550 for a week. Plenty of living space, parking and a big garden. I see it's now £600 at that time although you can't book because of Lockdown. It's £1000 in peak summer but not available of course because fully booked. I don't think that's bad compared to our holidays abroad, which would only be once a year, but £1000s

We have booked a week at a cottage in Suffolk with access to a pool and near the beach for just over £700 which I thought was ok. We didn't even look at Cornwall because we'd heard how expensive it is this year and the traffic!

I got a quote for 6.5k for a caravan in Cornwall in August...

Shock

Bloody hell! I'd want a 6 bedroom caravan with a private heated pool for that. And a naked butler service.

I'd expect to keep the bloody caravan for £6.5k!
Hollyhead · 15/02/2021 12:07

I call bullshit on some of this. A quick search of Hoseasons reveals LOTS of available holiday parks in Cornwall for a week in August at less than £1500 - some significantly less.

heavycupcakeuser · 15/02/2021 12:28

We've booked four nights in north Norfolk in a nice cottage near the sea with playground and swimming pool access for £500.

Last year, we didn't book anything until the last minute and were able to get an airbnb on the Kent coast for a very reasonable price.

Though I think we get good prices because we seldom go away for a whole week. We usually want a long weekend or several days midweek so we tend to get the "gap" days which are probably discounted.

TheyIsMyFamily · 15/02/2021 12:44

I agree. It's always expensive here in spite of unpredictable often awful weather and poor amenities in many places. I don't get it.

You can get so much more for less, including better weather, by leaving the county.

Peace43 · 15/02/2021 12:48

I just booked 7 nights beachfront for £18 a night. It is for my luxury touring caravan and I will need to empty my chemical toilet each day but it is generally lovely!

Frazzled2207 · 15/02/2021 12:51

Tbf to accomodation managers in most cases they need to charge more just to cover the costs while they were closed. People will pay more for a uk hol this year. It does mean that people with a lower budget will miss out tho Sad

Thewordgame · 15/02/2021 13:54

No to uk holidays, too many bad experiences, can’t believe we actually paid to have themConfused

peak2021 · 15/02/2021 13:57

It will be even more if some schools have 'catch up' opening in July or August, though unlikely.

Holidays in school holiday time will always be expensive, as spreading out of school term dates and holidays will not happen. In part because no-one would want the earlier time, say mid-June to late July, and beginning 'autumn' term on 1 August.

Hollyhead · 15/02/2021 14:00

@peak2021 my children will be going on the holiday I have booked rather than attending a previously unscheduled 'catch up'. I haven't bust a gut working full time and getting 2 primary children through 3-4 seesaw activities a day for them to miss any of their summer holiday.

Figgygal · 15/02/2021 14:06

As much as I love a holiday park for the kids to have activities and a pool I can’t bring myself to go to such a place this year due to amount of people that will undoubtedly be there. A very nice site that we’ve been to a couple of times in Devon £1500 for a week I’m just not paying it.

Getting an air bnb for £450 for 5 nights - third time there
2 minute walk to beach
Sea view
Balcony

GreenlandTheMovie · 15/02/2021 14:36

Total rip off. I've seen £100 a night for a stay in a glorified shed with no toilet in the Highlands of Scotland out of peak season.

To be fair, business rates are high here and holiday businesses don't really get the financial help that some similar small businesses on the continent get. And the amount of building control, EPCs, safety features, etc are extremely expensive in the UK and will be adding to the cost.

Edinburgh City Council is introducing licenses for properties listed on Air BnB, for example, so in addition to landlord registration and HMO licenses that the family sized ones might already have, this is going to add to the cost as it will mean that council inspections and about 9 different safety checks are required.

HelloDoris · 15/02/2021 15:09

Booked a week in a flat on Airbnb on the Isle of Wight with a money back guarantee. Cost £450 for the first week of the summer holiday. The ferry cost half again Confused, we don't tend to do abroad holidays I don't like flying and have never found a good price in the school holidays. We wanted Cornwall but the prices were horrifying.
