What age should a child be able to write their name ?
And what age should they be able to spell their name ?

Should or average? It will depend on the child and their opportunities.

Dancingtoyourheartbeat · 14/02/2021 08:33

Sorry the average age xx

Probably depends on the child and the name. Mine all are neurotypical and have short 3-4 letter names. They could all recognise their names before starting school and sound them out, and write them by about half a term into reception. My youngest is the oldest in his year (1st September birthday) and could write it (badly) before leaving nursery, but regressed a bit in the holidays).

I don't know about average, but my younger niece could write her name at 3, but then had to count the letters (there are 9) to make sure she had spelled it correctly.

That's a bit of a how long is a piece of string question. My DD was nearly 4 when she could do that.

There an Education topic with sub topics. Or maybe Chat?

My child is 3 and can say the letters of her name but not write it without help- she starts school in September, I expect by the time she starts she should be able to.
However the facts she can spell her name doesn’t seem important until she can connect what’s she’s saying to what it means.

NerrSnerr · 14/02/2021 08:49

My daughter could write it when she started school (she's an August baby so just turned 4). My son turns 4 in April and he is beginning to give it a go at preschool (he can get a few letters right). Mine have long names (9 and 11 characters). If i had called them Ava and Tom it may have been earlier!

My DC could write their names with incorrect letter formation at about 3.5. They could recognize their names quite a bit earlier then this. They were taught to write with proper letter formation in reception.

None of mine until they started school.

All boys if it makes any difference, but also not short names.

They are all academically on par or above currently.

Thesearmsofmine · 14/02/2021 09:09

4 or 5. Many will do it earlier but usually they can do it at reception age.

Mine all learned at pre-school, as part of the moving on to school prep.
