Well,

We finally exchanged on Thursday just gone. Our buyers pretty much dictated the moving date for the chain of four because they were adamant they would only use their chosen moving company. All along they’ve been moaning about money here and there, and the unspoken (mostly) hint that they cannot possibly afford anything extra at all (they both have decent jobs and large pensions from their previous careers - me and DH are still working for their former employer, and we do know them from work).

Back in November we agreed a price for all curtain poles, all downstairs curtains and several Roman blinds. At the time we also agreed that we would aim for at least half a tank of oil to be left for them (oil fired heating and hot water) and said we would just ask the latest rate for 500L (the tank takes 1300L but we weren’t going to nit pick). We explained to estate agent we would want this all paid for at exchange.

Nothing is now forthcoming from the buyers. The estate agent said ‘they need to think about the oil’ and so far no money paid for the curtains etc.

We complete on the 25th, and having seen what they’re like I wouldn’t want to leave everything and have them pay after completion. I’m not prepared to just leave the things as they’re all v high quality items, and I could probably make more on eBay!

We feel a bit like they’re letting it drift to make it a huge hassle for us last minute to remove our things and they get them by default.

When their buyer suddenly demanded a 15k drop they were immediately onto us to take the drop for them!

What would you do?

Re the oil - offer to anyone can syphon it out, our lovely neighbour let us syphon her remaining oil out when she sold. We also had her woodpile, several of her plants and many of her pots of plants she couldn't take.

@Bunnyfuller

Because once we complete they have no obligation to let us have them back!

The done thing is to pay at exchange, or so we are told.

The house has 18 windows. Tbh, if they hadn’t pissed us around I would probably leave the poles, but they’ve tried to reduce costs to them all along the way. We’ve now got a moving date DH has to work because they’d said that date or nothing.

No the done thing is not to charge extra for curtain poles which are usually useless in another house.

I would definitely not pay for these things at exchange why would I, I can’t use them.

You sound awful to deal with.

Take anything that isn't nailed down. They are running down the clock, hoping you'll think £250 isn't worth kicking up a fuss about.

StanfordPines · 16/02/2021 12:02

I can see both sides of this.
Yes taking curtains is rather tight, especially as there is little chance of them being of use in the new house. But they were given the option to buy them and they are now hoping they will get them for free.

LGY1 · 16/02/2021 13:15

Take the view that they don’t care about you, so don’t care about them, it’s a business transaction.
However don’t let them stress you out at an already stressful time

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 16/02/2021 13:53

For me, it's all about attitude. If people played fair with me, then I wouldn't mind leaving them things like the oil and curtains etc. However, if people have been pissing me about and kept trying their luck, I would turn ultra stubborn and take it with me.

theyarereallytakingthepissnow · 16/02/2021 13:53

I'm usually lovely and bend over backwards too but I agree they sound horrible so I'd be taking the same line as you at this point.

Have learnt over many years there are some people who just don't reciprocate and I will no longer facilitate their crap. Enlightening!

You sound exactly like the type of awful Person OP is dealing with Grin

BullOx · 18/02/2021 16:53

@Bunnyfuller - did they pay up?

diggetydoolittle · 18/02/2021 17:17

@Bunnyfuller

We’ve exchanged so no going back, completion date is set.

If they aren’t prepared to pay for what they asked for then we need to get them down by the middle of next week as will have to fill holes etc.

The holes are only going to be there because they are being CFers so don't go to the effort of filling them, just take the stuff down and let them deal with it.
Bunnyfuller · 18/02/2021 17:22

They paid!

The estate agent called me and more or less said she was getting tired of the cf-ery and emailed them.

DH is very relieved!
