To think COVID will kill me

Hi all, I know this sounds majorly dramatic but I just need some advice on how likely I am to die from COVID. I am around 26 and i weigh around 16 stone. It’s only just dawned on me how heavy I am, I had my DD in 2018 and then I had gallstones and lost loads of weight than I got pregnant with my DS who was born premature in January 2020.

I had COVID and a premature baby to deal with and I didn’t think about what my weight was and whether I would be “at risk” I’ve kept to all the guidelines as was on maternity for the majority of 2020 so my children remained at home and then when I returned to work I am WFH home full time.

It’s only just dawned on me when I weighed myself how much weight I am carrying (both labours were c section so tummy looks wrecked anyway) and now I am worried what if I catch COVID and die from it. I’ve been suffering with a bit of mortality anxiety for a while since having had what is classed as 3 major surgeries within 2 years.

My children go to a childminder 3 days and my mum for one day as I work for a HA and my partner is in development so they are out of the house for 4 days a week and then I have one day off to look after them.

I have taken exercise since I realised and I am trying a new diet but I am worried it won’t change anything and I will still succumb to it if I caught it.

I am just wondering whether I would actually be at risk of dying from it with the condition I am in now or not. Please try and be friendly I know I shouldn’t have let myself get to this size. I’ve been battling with 2 very difficult pregnancies and one illness that nearly wiped me out anyway

Hi OP. I am 46, unfit and of a similar weight to you. I had a bad strain of Covid last month, and suffered for a couple of weeks. And then emerged completely fine. I'm a non-smoker which I think helps.
You'll be ok. If I can beat it, then I'm sure the majority of people your age can too.

Zoecarter · 12/02/2021 21:35

I weigh more and had covid. I lost taste and smell and that was it. Ironically it was picked up at my preop for weightloss surgery

NeverWillIEver · 12/02/2021 21:37

I'm CEV and have 0 immune system. I'm also over weight.

Had Covid. Very mild.

I think its pretty pot luck

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 12/02/2021 21:37

You’re at slightly higher risk because of your weight, OP, but your risk is still low because you’re young and otherwise healthy. So don’t put extra stress on yourself. Enjoy your family life and just try to eat healthily. Best of luck, and be kind to yourself.

Ahmnotacat · 12/02/2021 21:37

I'm sorry you're feeling anxious, OP. It's a horrible feeling.

The truth of your situation is that you're overwhelmingly likely to be fine even if you do get Covid. Most people in their 90s are far, far more likely to be fine than not. This is just a focus for your anxiety. Be kind to yourself.

GabsAlot · 12/02/2021 21:38

im your weight ish op and i do worry myself but yoyre much younger than me-

keep doing all you can we'll get the vaccine soon

nancywhitehead · 12/02/2021 21:38

You are very young. It's a scary time but please try not to worry too much, at 26 you are very unlikely to be massively affected even if you do get Covid despite your weight.

Just do what you can for your health the same as you always would, but try not to live in fear of a virus that you may or may not get. Also it maybe worth seeing if you can get some support with that anxiety via the GP perhaps or a counsellor to talk to about all this. Good luck.

Coffeyy · 12/02/2021 21:41

I had covid end of last year and at the time I was 17 and half stone, I’m 27 and a smoker... I had a mild case.... never struggled to breathe was more nauseous and couldn’t taste or smell.

I was sure if I got it I would be very ill and I was surprised that I wasn’t so I wouldn’t fret too much as I think the risk is lower than you imagine.

RedcurrantPuff · 12/02/2021 21:42

I am older and much heavier than you. Even although the risk increases with BMI it’s still a low risk x

ScruffGin · 12/02/2021 21:46

Not read all the answers, but I work with severely ill covid patients. Most are obese, but almost none are under 40. I've not seen any under 30 at all. I don't think you have anything to worry about from covid (obviously, make sure you will follow all the advice...).
Yes, long term, you should think about losing weight for your health, but it shouldn't make any noticeable difference to your risk of becoming seriously unwell with covid.

rhowton · 12/02/2021 21:54

You're 26 years on! You're also unnecessarily dramatic.

Unecessary 🤬

thepeopleversuswork · 12/02/2021 22:41

OP you have to bear in mind:

a) That by far the biggest risk factor with COVID is age and you are very young.
b) That even among very high risk people (ie over 80s or CEV), the vast majority of people don't die from or even become severely ill from COVID.

It's impossible to give you a meaningful sense of the risk to you: there are anomalies and rare examples of people in your age group who become severely ill and die, so I can't say you have nothing to worry about.

But in the scheme of things your risk is very, very small.

That's not to say you shouldn't look at lifestyle changes to improve your health. But don't become overly fixated on this.

Dartsplayer · 12/02/2021 22:47

My friend is 39 and over 18st. She had it at Christmas and only had headaches and a loss of taste and smell with it. You're young. I think your chances of dying from it are very small

My mum’s cousin is 73, morbidly obese with many health issues. He had only mild symptoms.

partyatthepalace · 13/02/2021 01:30

Tiny tiny risk. You weight would increase your risk, but at your age that’s a tiny addition to what is a negligible risk. You’d be fine.

FluffySocks75 · 13/02/2021 01:54

Dont panic. Just start to make some changes now if you feel able. Putting loads of pressure on and crash dieting or anything wont help as you wont be able to stick to it. Just try to increase steps. Make some healthier swaps. You should see some impact fairly quickly.

Dont beat yourself up. It's been a crazy time. Just do what you can now. Smile
