would you use a surface wipe on a baby's/toddler skin

trying to decide if i am being dramatic. I would not use a surface wipe, say for example a detol surface cleaner wipe to clean my child (18 months) hands, face etc. Totally fine to use it for its purpose of cleaning where food has been or a high chair after meal or whatever. I would use a baby wipe to quickly wipe a surface down if they had left sticky fingers somewhere but never the other way around.
my MIL tried to offer and then when declined, use herself a surface wipe to clean toddlers hands and face. As in i had to remove the wipe from the childs hands and forcefully say no to MIL because it was being done anyway after i had declined and said i wouldn't use said wipe for child skin. Its really annoyed me. MIL is very anti chemicals. Telling us how bad soap is for you and you should only buy a certain type, how you shouldn't use cleaning products to clean your house etc. So I was even more surprised to have this situation happen. MIL can be difficult and challenging, contradicting etc. But regardless of that, AIBU just because I find her difficult and we clash a bit? Maybe its fine to use a surface wipe on a childs skin? It wasn't a branded wipe, it was some cheap wipe that just said food surface cleaner

@Veryverycalmnow this is why we have never ever left the child there!
@Sceptre86 thats probably what annoys me most. I'm not nuts, i know she won't die but I said no.
@Username12353784 i agree and fyi you should see her dish cloth, its slimy, its never changed, safer not to use it to clean a surface, i defo would of had a small stroke if that came near the childs face
@Marmite27 sleep deprivation is not fun. I am struggling with sleep at moment as am pregnant so was checking my crankiness was not effecting my judgement on this occasion either

No, but my dh did use a flash wipe on my niece about 15 years ago and she lived to tell the tale.

ktp100 · 12/02/2021 14:15

Of course not!!

The products on the cleaning wipe are entirely different and could cause chemical burns.

R3ALLY · 12/02/2021 14:41

DS has sensitive skin and we used a cheap wipe on him when in a friends house and stuck - an actual baby wipe, just not his usual water wipe. His lips swelled and we ended up in the out of hours doctors. I’m pretty easy going about most things but that scared me and the doctor took it seriously too. So no!

Julianamechange · 12/02/2021 14:44

I have used a Milton wipe to wipe child’s hands before.

I have also used a Milton wipe to clean my hands in the car after putting petrol in.

This would be a last resort though as I had run out of hand sanitizer. Wouldn’t do it at home when I could just wash hands.

Ileflottante · 12/02/2021 14:45

Ask her if she’d use one on her fandango after going for a wee.

AryaStarkWolf · 12/02/2021 14:47

Absolutely not, we have a wooden counter top and I wouldn't even use it on that, never mind a baby's skin

CovidPostingName · 12/02/2021 15:01

I mean, if for whatever reason it was the only thing I had, and my child had got dog poo over their hands, then yeah maybe. But otherwise? Absolutely not.

Chanjer · 12/02/2021 15:05

Detol make combo ones for skin and surfaces

Chanjer · 12/02/2021 15:07

tbf the Dettol surface wipes don't have bleach in them and probably not that different ingredient wise to actual Dettol, which you'd put on a wound without thinking

onetwothreeadventure · 12/02/2021 15:24

Are you sure your MIL didn't think it was a wet wipe? Such a strange thing to do!

GrassWasGreener · 12/02/2021 15:42

@Ileflottante LOL
@Chanjer if it had been an actual detol wipe, it would of annoyed me but maybe less, hard to tell at this point but at least i would of recognised it as a reputable brand. I love a bit of detol for cleaning and disinfecting if needed, but this random wipe with who knows what, i was just so skeptical
@onetwothreeadventure she said i have some surface wipes so i don't think she was mixed up

for entertainment purposes, the day she came over to mine (happens once a year) she looked around and announced the hand soap i had at sink was dangerous and full of chemicals and i shouldn't use it blabla, i simply responded with - well its not like im drinking it is it. Suitable safe soap was then given to me for xmas

I definitely wouldn’t. It would be way too harsh on the skin, and potentially toxic if they put their hands in their mouth afterwards. It’s a really daft thing to do and YANBU.

Dogsarehairy · 12/02/2021 16:25

All I can add it that when I was in a public loo with no roll and desperately took a packet of flash wipes out of my shopping the subsequent pain and irritation was unbelievable.

BeardieWeirdie · 12/02/2021 17:05

Bloody hell, that’s awful. I’d never let her babysit after that stunt. She clearly can’t be trusted to look after a child. I wouldn’t want to use those wipes with my hands let alone clean up a child with them.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/02/2021 17:35

Dogsarehairy - Ouch Flowers

Never really understood the craze for wipes - always find they dry out before I use them, so don't bother now, other than nappy wipes but a pack lasts for ages. (for me - they're about half the price of "Andrex moist tissue"Hmm and I figure they do the same thing).

I suppose as a one off probably wouldn't severely harm a child, certainly on hands, not keen on face - but I suppose they put their fingers everywhere.

FangsForTheMemory · 12/02/2021 17:37

If I did, I'd immediately rinse the detergent or whatevs in it off with plenty of clean water.

Holly60 · 12/02/2021 17:39

No! I wouldn’t clean my own hands with one, let alone a child or baby’s face. And from someone who is a MIL- the smallest hint from you should have been enough to stop her! Silly woman!

MinnieJackson · 12/02/2021 18:10

No, never! I think there was a post on here before when a lady's husband had been using them on his face and had a terrible rash 😂

nanbread · 12/02/2021 22:04

Just want to add that wet wipes full stop are pretty shit at cleaning baby's faces, and bad for the environment.

We bought some cheeky face wipes (reusable cloth wipes) and have been using them for nearly 8 years. Work so much better than wet wipes at getting food off and you just put a bit of water on them so no chemicals added except H20. Loads cheaper than buying wet wipes too.

Could never get on with the bum ones though, my DC's poos were utterly foul by poo standards.

Blacknosugarplease · 12/02/2021 22:33

Hmm, no not Child’s Farm tonight, I think I’ll use CIF in the baby’s bath water Grin

lanthanum · 12/02/2021 22:44

Is it possible that she just didn't know what they were? I don't think I've ever come across "surface wipes", and if she's the same I can imagine she just thought they were baby wipes.
