Yes, shoot me down - ready to be flamed. Hard hat on!

But read first...

What do you think? I'm not sure this would actually happen but what if AIBU was removed? People would have to post on appropriate topics but each thread title should have ADVICE or SUPPORT or DISCUSSION or OPINIONS or even AIBU.

That way people (including me) can still get their 'aibu/drama/viper fix' on different topics but only on threads that have discussion, opinions and aibu.

It just seems everyone is posting different topics on aibu so the point of having different topics/boards is lost and those of us who've hidden some topics still see them all over 'Active Threads' because of this.

I feel like some posters see AIBU as a licence to be rude. I get posting for traffic but if I want serious opinions I post on a relevant board.

stackemhigh · 12/02/2021 14:27

Where were people posting for traffic before aibu?

Probably Chat.

stackemhigh · 12/02/2021 14:28

I'd like MN to enforce keeping Covigilantes in the Coronavirus topic, and not derailing AIBU threads.

They are a dull bunch.

Hardhatsafelyon · 12/02/2021 14:28

If there was one large 'pets' forum, it would get reasonable traffic and people would use it.

I agree. Not having one pet forum and sub topics for different pets, for example.

Grendalsmum · 12/02/2021 14:30

I'm only here for AIBU!

Hardhatsafelyon · 12/02/2021 14:31

@wigglerose

I think MN would lose its traffic and revenue.
Yes I agree it will affect them, that's why I doubt it will ever be done.

@VasterThanEmpires

You could just completely render AIBU obsolete by having the heading 'please remember different people have different lives, feelings, experiences and priorities' at the top of each post. That would cut down 80 - 90% of posts?
😅 Good point.

I agree. On the question - I think there are far too many topics on here. I actually can't be bothered to scan the many boards, but I would if there were say 10 or less. For that reason I tend to stick to aibu and chat.
clockstopper · 12/02/2021 14:34

If there was one large 'pets' forum, it would get reasonable traffic and people would use it.

It'd be carnage. The dogs would chase the cats, the cats would eat the fish, mice, budgies and rats and then the dogs would have to eat the one legged ginger guinea pigs whilst being squashed by horses slipping over on the hen and pig shit. Don't ask about the goats.

BlusteryLake · 12/02/2021 14:43

Two things come to mind:
I like the other boards because they are a lot more pleasant and discursive than AIBU, which I find is extensively populated with very rude, pugnacious posters.
Secondly, I think YABU to expect to come onto a large forum like MN and expect to not see topics you aren't interested in. Just scroll past them.

Tarantallegra · 12/02/2021 14:45

I wouldn't like to see it go but I would like to see it more heavily moderated so posts that literally start with "not an aibu but posting for traffic" get moved to the right place. I also thought there was a wwyd section that I was surprised never got used. We could probably do with a "just having a rant" section too as so many people clearly aren't being unreasonable but someone has to stick the knife in because it's aibu.

Agree with there being too many topics, pets is definitely a good example of one that could be condensed. If there were a lot less topics they might not be so empty. Not sure why there are so many chats either, 30 days, 90 days, etc. Surely temporary threads don't need so many different timescales?!

TartanLassie · 12/02/2021 14:47

Before the AIBU topic people used to just use chat and put AIBU in the thread title. Hence why we now have an AIBU topic.

So would not make a blind bit of difference if the topic was removed! We would still have AIBU!

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/02/2021 15:13

We did not want even chat at the time. Poor Justine had to file chat under _chat so it came very last in the list, and didn't pollute our list of topics. We were TERRIBLE. Blush

BarbaraofSeville · 12/02/2021 15:14

Everyone would just go back to using Chat like they did before aibu

And what would be wrong with that? It would spare us from the contrived thread titles like 'AIBU to ask you which vacuum cleaner I should buy'.

Tarantallegra · 12/02/2021 15:26

@BarbaraofSeville at least half the time they put voting options on. I will admit it gives me some weird satisfaction to vote YABU on every single one Grin

HitchFlix · 12/02/2021 15:47

No. I can't be arsed scrolling through the 70 billion topics to find something of interest. AIBU is a one stop shop when I need entertaining during quick snatches of time. YABU.

Why pick on the pet owners? I might not want to pick my way through dog posts when I only have cats.
Hardhatsafelyon · 12/02/2021 16:21

Fair enough. Same way I don't want to pick my way through threads that aren't really aibu or belong in other topics when I'm only on aibu for the real bunfights

Not picking on pet owners. The post I quoted mentioned pets and I continued with the example (as you can see I wrote). It applies to other forums too.

VasterThanEmpires · 12/02/2021 16:55

I've seen some fucking outrageous things on AIBU but none so much as the idea of putting dog people and cat people on one forum together. That's end-of-days shit that is Shock

SoupDragon · 12/02/2021 17:47

The doves would keep the peace.

Not if the cats got to them early enough.

clockstopper · 12/02/2021 17:51

The doves would keep the peace.

The cats would put paid to that.

longwayoff · 12/02/2021 18:30

Remove yourself. You don't have to be here so leave it to people who like it. Thanks. Bye.

notanothertakeaway · 12/02/2021 18:35

I think there are too many topics. But occasionally, I find a niche topic helpful eg skiing, Disneyland

There are too many "AIBU to be surprised they sell hairbrushes in Lidl?" posts

katy1213 · 12/02/2021 18:35

I'm only here for the entertainment value of AIBU.
I'd happily ban all Covid threads though!
