Why are they trying to make out it's a bargain with this. One pack of 4 chocolate flakes 1.47 euro, buy 2 packs....3 euro. Isn't the whole idea meant to be buy two packs, get them slightly cheaper. It doesn't make sense. But this isn't the first time, they do this kind of thing regular. You get penalised for buying two. Shock

Well it’s hardly just Tesco’s is it, all shops do it , I remember needing to buy wipes and it was cheaper to buy 3 single packs than one multi pack which was annoying when they have a 95 item limit in place

seashells11 · 12/02/2021 10:19

I've only known Tesco do it tbh.

YANBU. There's presumably some sort of method to the madness of discounting, but whatever it is it regularly throws up situations where there's a fabulous deal on (for e.g) Hula Hoops where 2 packs of 12 are £3... or buy a megapack of 24 for £3.

Or 24 Babybel for £3, or buy 2 packs of 12 for £2.50

It drives me nuts having to endlessly calculate whether the multibuy deal or "value pack" is actually a decent deal.

Diet coke is particularly bad for endless confusing permutations of deals.

Aprilx · 12/02/2021 10:22

I haven’t seen it much, but the other day I added some jellies to my order and noticed it was 60p for one but it was £4 for a pack of 6.

It's an oversight and you don't get penalised for buying 2. You will be charged 1.47 for each item.

For the offer the till would take off anything over and above 3 euro. 1.47 + 1.47 is less so you would pay less.

HollowTalk · 12/02/2021 10:24

They rely on customers having poor numeracy skills.

1.47 + 1.47 is 2.94 - the charge for 2 of these packets of chocolate will be 2.94 regardless of the numeracy skills of the purchaser.
GraduallyWatermelon · 12/02/2021 11:09

Yeah usually those are a misprint or computer muck up. Just point it out to a staff member and they'll probably take the ticket off

BidensWingWoman · 12/02/2021 11:10

It's because there are other more expensive items in the offer. So if someone wanted one item at €1.99 and one at €1.47 they would make a saving.

Of course, most sensible people would but two of the more expensive item unless they particularly needed the cheaper one...

I renewed my phone contract the other day. 24pcm for 12 months, or "save money" by paying 300 for 12 months in advance. Erm, 12*24=288.

BluebellsareBlue · 12/02/2021 11:20

Tesco try and bring you the lowest possible price where they can, if the supplier gives Tesco an offer of a lower price then they will pass it on to the consumer, it's up to the consumer which offer fits them best.

Yes but it wasn't. The price was 3 euro.

The price was not 3 euro.

The offer was either an oversight or past of an offer that included more expensive items.

The till does not add extra costs on to purchases.

If you buy 2 things that cost more than 3 euro on a 2 for 3 euro offer the till will remove the extra cost to bring the total down to 3 euro.

If you buy 2 things that total less than 3 euro you will pay the cost of 2 x individual item. Every single time.

slashlover · 12/02/2021 11:43

It's not just Tesco, I used to get people moaning at me when I worked for the Co-op. As PP has said, Flakes wont be the only items in the deal. So there might be Dairy Milk at 1.99 and Boost at 1.79.

If you get two Flakes it will charge you 2x1.47=2.94
If you get a Flake and a Dairy Milk then it will be 1.47+1.99=3.46 but will charge 3.00
If you get a Flake and a Boost 1.47+1.79=3.26, charge £3.00

The thing you really need to watch out for is if you are buying an odd number of products. If you buy one of each, some supermarkets will add the cheapest items in the deal then charge full price for the most expensive.

seashells11 · 12/02/2021 13:08

If you buy 2 things that total less than 3 euro you will pay the cost of 2 x individual item

If that was the case the offer of "buy two for 3 euro* would be meaningless. To have got them for 1.47 id have had to do two separate transactions.

The offer was either an oversight/mistake - it happens. Or, there were other items included in the offer that would have taken the total above 3.

Nobody scanned 2 packets of chocolate at 1.47 each only for the till to add .06 onto it to make it cost 3.

They are in a multibuy with other products.

If you scan them through in the same transaction then they will be 2.94. It will not round it up.

MemoryIsRAM · 12/02/2021 14:17

Lots of places do this - the Co-Op is particularly bad for it.
I've got a whole folder of them for Maths displays at school! Grin

I don't live in Ireland.

I re-iterate; no Tesco I know sells ANYthing in euros.

slashlover · 12/02/2021 14:28

Just looked on the Tesco.ie site and there are 30 products in the multibuy deal, including items at 2.94 and 3.10.

Maybe you not knowing a Tesco which sells anything in Euros and you not living in Ireland where Euros are the currency are somehow linked?

TalesTheCat · 12/02/2021 15:09

If you look at the pictures the deal contains more expensive items too, so if you have a flake and a bar of dairy milk you will only pay €3
