I'm starting a new job in two weeks.
I'm working 40 hours a week
I've been given two options
5 days in with 8 hour shifts and 2 days off or
4 days in with 10 hour shifts and 3 days off

I'm thinking of doing the 4 days in
What would you do
Aibu to think it will be better

Do you have to tie in with childcare so limited in the length of dats you can do? If not then 4 and 3.

Shamoo · 11/02/2021 22:53

4 for sure, if you can!

covetingthepreciousthings · 11/02/2021 22:54

4 days.

BobbinAround · 11/02/2021 22:54

Are those likely to be fixed hours? Will you be able to walk away after your 8/10 hour shift or is there likely to be an expectation to work later or take work home.

I would probably do 4 x 10 hours assuming that I would get my three days off without being expected to do any work on my days off. Otherwise I'd do the 5 x 8 hours.

purpleme12 · 11/02/2021 22:54

I would always go for less days

natttyy · 11/02/2021 22:56

No if I choose 4 days and 3 off,it will deffo be those hours.
Only thing it won't be 3 days consecutively.
It could be Friday /sat /wed
Or mom/wed/Friday etc

Less days if it doesnt affect your childcare. Those free days are precious.I am moving from four days a week to five and dreading it a bit as compressing life into the weekend can be very stressful.

whoamongstus · 11/02/2021 23:09

I'd do the longer days for the benefit of always having 3 off BUT if it won't be consecutive it could end up feeling worse as you don't get a 'proper' weekend - if you do 2 is always consecutive?

steff13 · 11/02/2021 23:10

I do 4 10s, 7-5:30, Monday-Thursday. I love my Fridays off.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/02/2021 23:12

4 days

Lovethewater · 11/02/2021 23:51

I would do 4 days if child care was not an issue for those hours. However I would want at least two of the days off together, having all single days isn't really a break.

1Dandelion1 · 12/02/2021 00:10

I work full-time in condensed days, it's hard and not the bed of roses people dream of. You have to be ultra organised (batch cooking) and realise that for those 4 days there is no time for anything other than the basics - you will also be shattered, the extra hours really make a difference.

Having said that, it's the best thing I ever did (although I have 3 days in a row off). That extra day a week is a me day, I use it however I fancy and within normal work hours absolutely no household chores get included on that day!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/02/2021 00:14

how tiring is the work, and is there a long commute?

BackforGood · 12/02/2021 00:17

5 days.

But it does depend on the intensity of your work, your commute, your lifestyle and commitments, how much you like a lie-in, what your family or friends work, etc. etc.

FredaFlintstone · 12/02/2021 00:28

I work full time compressed over 4 days - Tuesday to Friday, 8-6.

Working 10 hours is nothing when you're used to 8 anyway. And chucking on the extra 2 hours a day is SO worth it for a whole extra day off.

I've only worked 4 days for a few years now, I never want to work a 5 day week again.
