To not have cleared my front path of snow?

Justmuddlingalong · 11/02/2021 12:07

We live on the east coast of Scotland, so snow is rare and for it to lie is even rarer.
We have about 2 inches of snow, which I haven't cleared from the front path. The front garden has a gate, a straight, flat path about 8 feet long leading to the front door.
I had an email from Amazon this morning to say that the Royal Mail had been unable to deliver my (very small, would fit through the letterbox) parcel because "the front door/driveway was not accessible."
I've cleared it now, but as snow's so unusual here, I would like to throw open voting to ask AIBU to expect my post to be delivered even though my garden path has a covering of fluffy white snow?

I'm also East Coast of Scotland, my garden is THICK with snow (a lot more than 2 inches) and my mail has been delivered every day. My postie leaves lovely big footprints!

emmathedilemma · 11/02/2021 12:25

The fluffy snow is fine to walk on. If you clear it and don't grit or clear every last spec of snow then it's worse than the fluffy stuff because it freezes.

Ffsnosexallowed · 11/02/2021 12:28

East Scotland here too. Our road has been inaccessible for past 2 days, so didn't clear the driveway. Now that its more accessible I've just been out with dp clearing some. Definitely more than 2 inches! Why should delivery drivers risk slipping on your path?

Justmuddlingalong · 11/02/2021 12:36

You've obviously had a load more snow than us.

My postie managed to deliver this morning despite 8 inches of snow, and the council haven’t adopted our roads so they haven’t been cleared in days! Also east coast Scotland. Your postie is being precious.

Ace1185 · 11/02/2021 12:44

East Coast aswell and the snow is thick at least 5in I have cleared the path for the postie just makes his life a bit easier really

GreenlandTheMovie · 11/02/2021 12:44

I dont understand the opposition to clearing your front path of snow.

To me, its too much of "the coonsil shid dae it" mentality.

Clearing your own path is normal in other countries.

User0ne · 11/02/2021 12:48

How odd.

We live in the north Pennines and have had 4-12inces of snow pretty much constantly since Christmas. Sometimes I clear the path but often it's safer to leave the snow because otherwise it turns to sheet ice as soon as any melts.

No one has refused to deliver anything.

Daphnise · 11/02/2021 12:48

Well you know now what happens when you don't clear it- so it's your choice "nice fluffy snow" or no postal deliveries.

Tavannach · 11/02/2021 12:48

I'd clear the path.
If the postman slips on your path and injures himself aren't you liable?

Hahaha88 · 11/02/2021 12:49

I havent done mine, as I don't have a shovel, and I'm pregnant, and tbf the path on the road isn't done so if the postie can't get down my garden s/he's not getting round thr houses either

Justmuddlingalong · 11/02/2021 12:55

I had to use a plastic dustpan to scoop it up and throw it onto the grass.

I clear my path and put salt down....I don’t want my postman/delivery drivers to slip

TheChip · 11/02/2021 13:02

I never really thought about it until now. We only have a little bit of snow at the minute. I wouldnt really think anything of it if I was walking up someone's path and it still had snow.
So for that, I'll say yanbu.

RB68 · 11/02/2021 13:21

If there isn't too much bit of a sweep and some salt down. Sounds like you got the lazy pissed off postie though and I would go back to them and state less than 2 inches of snow and take a picture - not like you had a couple of feet - did he not deliver the whole round??

Justmuddlingalong · 11/02/2021 13:25

Well as there's the same depth of snow around the town, which hasn't been cleared, I can't imagine how he made it to my front gate.

DumplingsAndStew · 11/02/2021 13:30

Also east coast and it sounds like we've a little more than you. Even if I could - which I can't - why would I clear my path? The entire pavements are covered, what would be the point?

I assume the gate was able to be opened?

LakieLady · 11/02/2021 13:31

As someone who walked on a freshly snow-covered pavement, only to slip on the black ice that was concealed beneath, breaking my wrist, which then required surgery 15 months later, I have to say YABU!

Stompythedinosaur · 11/02/2021 13:34

Posts being delivered through a couple of feet of snow here. I haven't cleared either, as every time I do it just snow's more and I am a mite busy between work and homeschooling.

CakeRequired · 11/02/2021 13:38

What a precious postie. If our posties did that, we'd never get anything delivered. I'm in the Highlands, we get snow a lot. Our posties even manage to go up to the top of hills that get no gritters, no ploughing etc except by a nice farmer maybe. Its feet deep up there. How can they not walk in a couple of inches? Hardly difficult.

dreamerdreamer · 11/02/2021 13:41

It's courteous to clear at least the part on your property.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/02/2021 13:43

It's a couple of inches - he's being pathetic!!

Fresh crunchy snow is fabulous to walk in!

Floralnomad · 11/02/2021 13:47

I’m SE and we have a couple of inches , also a rarity and I’ve been getting parcels delivered ok , I can also get a pizza delivered and a new washing machine however apparently it’s too dangerous for the bin men to be out .

KOKOagainandagain · 11/02/2021 13:48

I live in rural Suffolk (east coast) and had loads - with the winds we had drifts of several feet. The local tractor had cleared the single track lane to our property but blocked my drive with several feet of snow cleared from the lane. I went out in a blizzard to try and clear it but it was still impassable. My Tesco delivery driver had to abandon his van but used a sack barrow to deliver my order. What a star Smile

Groovee · 11/02/2021 14:04

We're clearing our driveway as Dh has a procedure at the hospital tomorrow. Have had the postie and couriers deliver today who all said our driveway was the only place they felt safe to walk as it went to -9 here this morning so it's all frozen over.
