South west coast holidays vs north sea - discuss

If you've been to both coastal holiday locations in the south west (cornwall, Devon, wales etc) and those on north sea (north norfolk, yorkshire), which do you prefer for a summer holiday and why?

I'll start it off: south west every time. Better beaches, warmer, more nice pubs/restaurants.

Yabu = north sea
Yanbu = south west

Yep, NE for me. Go to Northumberland every year August bank hol - it's beautiful and so much quieter than the SW.

I've had great holidays in Devon & Cornwall but sometimes you just want to get away from people and the NE is much better for that.

It is cold though, ngl.

Anyone who doesnt like south west, apart from distance/travel time, what don't you like?

It's not the north.

Personally I prefer Norfolk/Suffolk for the weather. It is usually dry in summer and heat waves are common. The beaches are less busy. The sea is very cold though especially if you are used to the med. I like the broads too.

SW, because I love sea swimming but not ice swimming. But also, Dorset is home (even if I live in the next county these days.)

Having said that, I've enjoyed holidays in many parts of the UK, and my last one was in Yorkshire (back when we were allowed to have holidays.) So I don't actually mind that much. There are interesting things to see everywhere.

Mrs Mercedes if you haven't got anything meaningful to add why bother commenting.

'Discuss'. I hate it. It really winds me up. It comes across as an order being barked at me. It's demanding & entitled and I've been enjoying it become less used on here.

Anyway to answer your question I'll take any beach right now, preferably a rugged beach not a 'seaside'

LarsErickssong · 11/02/2021 16:10

North Sea. I actually think the beaches on the Northumberland coast are better than any I've been to in Devon or Cornwall, and the Yorkshire coast is nice too. As others have said there's also a lot more to do in Yorkshire/Northumberland on rainy days or if you fancy a change from the beach and the locals are generally nicer and more welcoming (I live in a seaside resort elsewhere and really don't understand the attitude some Cornwall residents have). Oh and the roads and parking are 100x better.

peak2021 · 11/02/2021 16:13

Do you really need a preference, as you don't have to go to the same place every year? It depends on what you look for in a holiday and the time of year perhaps.

I'd expect this year if crowds are not your thing, you'd need to avoid many parts of the south west for example.

pointyshoes · 11/02/2021 17:02

East coast is far sunnier than south wedt

lifeturnsonadime · 11/02/2021 17:31

Well if you're talking about this summer the south west will be rammed. I love Cornwall but much prefer it in the winter when it's less crowded.

When i was a child we always holidayed in Northumbria as we had family there. The coast line there is stunning but as others have said there always seems to be a chill wind.

We've also had some nice holidays on the North Norfolk coast.

FrustratedFrog · 11/02/2021 17:33

SW is wayyyyy better, please all go there 😁

Willyoujustbequiet · 11/02/2021 17:37

Yabu

You cant possibly think there are better beaches in the south than Northumberland.

You mustn't have been.

TheWernethWife · 11/02/2021 17:46

Love the beaches in Northumberland, was there in September.

Our car seems to come off the drive and head north, have family in the Highlands and some of the beaches up there are fabulous, Lossiemouth has soft, nearly white sand.

The furthest south our car has been is Leicester.

icelollies · 11/02/2021 17:51

South coast is just busy busy busy. If you want a whole beach to yourself to play football/frisbee, run, build the biggest sandcastles then go north / east!

Londonmummy66 · 11/02/2021 17:54

I think its horses for courses. With small children Pembrokeshire beach holidays are hard to beat - although somewhere like Bedruthen Steps hotel in Cornwall with its kids clubs etc is also a good bet. However once children are older an into watersports rather than sandcastles you're likely to need a wetsuit anyway in which case the NE has a lot more to offer. DC1 still looks back fondly on a week's post GCSE activity hoiliday in Northumbria where we went absailing, wild swimming, coasteering, paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing. It was also a hell of a lot cheaper than Cornwall!!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 11/02/2021 17:55

I've been down south to Cornwall and it was lovely, but I spent my life on the beach at Tynemouth, so I'd always go for NE.

Kids don't feel the cold.
