I’d saved the thread the other day to look at later as I’ve suffered from this for years, but it’s been zapped!

Please give me any tips you have but please don’t mention Cilit Bang!

I think the potential liver effects are over-egged as I understand the drug is expensive.

They're not overegged, they're just rare. People can need liver transplants / die if they are one of the unlucky ones. But it's only something like 1 in 50,000 people.

NailedIt1 I never heard of fungal nail infection so didn't realize my ex had it. He had poor personal hygiene and I caught all manner of things off him. I saw an ad on TV for Curanail where they showed pics and realized I'd caught it.

MynahBird I have filed the nail surface down gradually to the point where the nail bed is exposed on the worst ones and I'm treating that.

Sandgrown I did this and found that one of the nails developed a surface fungus which I think was living in the cream. The nail developed vertical ridges and white flecks, becoming thicker. It went away completely by filing the nail surface down until it looked normal nail underneath (normal except for the regular fungal nail diseased bits).

LuubyLuu I think that's the real reason GPs don't want to prescribe it. They don't want to spend the money on what they see as a cosmetic problem. If it gets bad enough they'll remove the toenail completely and put some sort of acid on it to stop it growing back. But from my exes experience it has to be ingrown, totally diseased and really thick before they'll do that.

There are different types of funguses too, which makes treatment harder too.

I have now dealt with a fungal toenail using something bought on Amazon - basically some sort of tea tree oil / Argan oil concoction you drip on to the toes twice a day. Mine was a mild infection but I had had it for years as I never realised it was fungus, I thought I'd just damaged that nail! So far it seems to be gone, but I need to wait for the full nail to grow out to be sure I guess. The liquid came with a nail file to file the nail before applying, then I cut off as much of the nail as I could each time to try and get the stuff going into the nail bed. Happy to check exactly what it was on Amazon but I'm sure there are plenty of similar options and it wasn't too expensive .

I'm intrigued by using purple spray - I used to put it on my horse's thrushy feet.
Don't you have purple feet all the time using that? Would be an interesting look for summer sandals!

Claireshh · 12/02/2021 10:38

After treating a fungal nail unsuccessfully for five years I contacted my GP in December. They sent a sample of nail to the lab and did some blood test to check my suitability for Terbafine. Lab confirmed fungsl infection and I started treatment at the end of December. I can already see a massive improvement.

That's really interesting, do you know what treatment for what type is recommended? I think I have a fairly mild case of c, but on maybe 3/4 toes. I think it started either as athlete's foot or a verruca.
AmberItsACertainty · 12/02/2021 11:21

melange99 thanks for that pic. I've had A, B and C. I'm still dealing with B on the last two toes.

Lockdownlumpy I paint it on with an artist's paint brush. Looks like non-shiny nail polish. If you paint the others either with Gentian Violet or purple nail polish they blend in.

Can we post links on here?

Melange99 · 12/02/2021 11:40

@nanbread No sorry, suggest adding the different types in Google and see if it leads to best treatments.

I think the most common is the one that causes athletes foot and then spreads. I don't have that one.

I think we all know that the quickest and most effective route would be the tablets that posters keep mentioning, however getting them is an issue, plus there are liver problems.

Lalliella · 12/02/2021 21:24

Aww thank you so much for all the suggestions, lots of things to try! I’m sad that 13% think I’m being unreasonable! A yucky subject, I do apologise. Confused though that 88% think IANBU!
@atlaspine interesting thanks, were you prediabetic? What's your current diet and did you do anything else with the toe?

My diet's been pretty awful since lockdown 2.
Hi - I was yes but have reversed it with low carb and sugar, and losing 20% of my body weight. I do the low sugar and carb with some fasting now and will have to for ever. The toenail I suddenly noticed after about 5 months - it was getting better. I had given up on it ever healing after trying 5 or 6 different treatments (but not oral fungicide). I feel much better overall.

nanbread · 14/02/2021 17:58

Thanks @AtlasPine do you mind if I ask how you knew you were prediabetic? I'm not overweight bmi-wise but otherwise health is not great.

AtlasPine · 14/02/2021 19:30

Routine blood test at go.i was horrified but had put on weight. So I bought a Nexus blood sugar monitor and started very actively changing my lifestyle while monitoring its impact on my blood sugar. (The Diabetes Code was a great read and gave me the information I needed about how to change and why) and now it’s always under the prediabetic level (so under 5.5 for fasting bloods) I like being slimmer but still have a little bit more to lose. It’s going off slower now though!
AtlasPine · 14/02/2021 19:31

Sorry go = gp

Here is the link to the other recent thread but I think very similar advice on both

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4146582-Cure-for-fungal-big-toenail-infection

tasmaniandevilchaser · 14/02/2021 19:44

I posted years ago asking a slightly different question- if you successfully got rid of toe nail fungus, what did you use? 100% of answers were terbinafine. I took it for 5 months and it worked, though my stomach was a bit nauseous for the first 3 weeks.

More recently I think it came back in one toenail, but just the beginning. I got rid of that with curanail. I must stress that it was so mild I wouldn't even have known it was there if I hadn't had it before. It also wasn't confirmed so possibly not actually fungus.

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/02/2021 19:53

Has anyone had their toenails removed for this? I absolutely hate my toenail as it's got a fungal infection, and it's just so crumbly and gross I'd rather just have it removed at this point after living with it for years now Sad

But I don't know if I'm being ridiculous..

Hairydilemma · 14/02/2021 19:58

I’ve had a fungal toenail for about 20 years on and off Blush. Went to a new chiropodist last year (or actually more likely end of 2019) who advised Emtrix which he said he’d seen work on people who had stubborn infections and where other solutions hadn’t worked.

He said it might take a year or so, but it’s definitely getting better. I’d say 90% of my toenail looks completely normal now. I buy it on Amazon and a tube lasts ages.

Bubblefart · 14/02/2021 20:25

Laser. It made them a million times better. Expensive though.

Frenchdressing · 14/02/2021 20:34

DH had it in all 5 nails. Was grim. The tablets sorted it almost immediately. Really effective.
