Period product labelling should be changed

AIBU to think that in 2020 with so much progress made to de-stigmatise periods and help people understand that periods are a natural and normal part of life, that we should get rid of the "night" label for the heaviest flows?

I have suffered with heavy periods since I was 12, teenage me was mortified at the thought of using a "night time" pad during the day as they are marketed as night time rather than the heaviest flow?

Another thing that annoys me is the label and design of the long pads where they say a certain way round is the "correct" way just because they say most leaks are at the back? My body isn't built like this lol for some reason any time I need extra coverage, I "leak" to the front and if I wore a pad the "correct way" it would offer absolutely zero protection.

Lol sorry for the weird rant, currently on atm if you haven't already guessed lol. Sad

Who exactly is judging you for wearing a night time pas in the day? If someone is I think you have bigger problems than labelling

toocold54 · 10/02/2021 20:02

Night pads are longer so they're less likely to leak when you're laying down.

This!
The flow has nothing to do with it as you can still get light, medium, heavy flow night and day towels.

DwangelaForever · 10/02/2021 20:04

Always night pads aren't exclusive to night though, if you look on the chart on the back it actually says for heavier flows too, that's what made me post lol, just seemed weird to me they were labeling the heaviest flow as night.

I hadn't really thought about the night pads being shaped differently cause of gravity etc.

Erm this is a really odd thing to be annoyed about tbh

2020iscancelled · 10/02/2021 20:11

YANBU!

I prefer the “longer” versions of the liners and pads (when I’ve used) as I find they’re just more comfortable and stay in place and offer better protection. I do actually feel a bit Hmm buying the longer ones as It’s like saying to the world I’ve got an extra long Fanny...

Strange.

I agree some of the wording and branding is a bit outdated now, it could def do with a shake up to make them less “this is for normal and this is for abnormal”

sarahc336 · 10/02/2021 20:12

I thought night pads are longer and wider so when your rolling around in bed less leaks where as you probably don't want a massive long and wide pad on in the day? I didn't think they were for heavier flow?

toocold54 · 10/02/2021 20:14

If it is good for moving around and having a long/heavy flow then I can see why you think they should be labelled for all usage.

I don't seem to have my period during the night so I have never needed the longer ones so it's actually something I haven't given much thought to until you said so I am glad you posted.

DwangelaForever · 10/02/2021 20:16

It wouldn't let me post a pic for some reason but the always fit finder has your underwear size and your flow, they have flows 1 - 4, size 1-2 are for light to medium flows and 3-4 are heavy flows yet are both marketed as night. Apparently if you're size L or XL you should be using 3 on a normal day and 4 on a heavy day. So they're not specifically made differently for nighttime they're just a bit longer.

I don't know what brands you're all talking about where there are apparently heavy flow pads for "daytime" because every brand I've ever used their heaviest flow is branded as night time.

Body form do a "heavy pad*

Most supermarket ones do too.

I don't mean to be pedantic...but it's 2021 now! Wink
poppycat10 · 10/02/2021 21:46

I think this is a non issue. I wear "night" towels in the day on my heaviest days because they are more absorbent than the "day" ones, though even then I might have to change after an hour.

Night and maxi aren't the same - maxi are smaller. And there are different sizes of night-time ones too.

I wish I knew why period blood defies gravity when you are in bed...

BashfulClam · 10/02/2021 22:25

I use nighttime pads throughout my full
Period. It never crossed my mind that it would be wring to do so. I also wear them back to front as my period blood seems to gone out quite far forward.

lumpyneck · 10/02/2021 22:36

Maternity pads are good - I buy them, then use 3 or 4 like a nappy almost ... I need to see my GP perhaps !

2pinkginsplease · 10/02/2021 22:41

Some people get their knickers in a knot about the simplest things!

Does it matter how they are labelled, use what ones suit you best.

PercyPiginaWig · 10/02/2021 22:50

I must have a strange anatomy, nothing really comes out when I'm lying down at night, I can just use a panty liner but then it all comes out due to gravity when I go for a wee. Confused

I think a PP's suggestion of 'night time and heavy flow' is good as it would work for the majority, from conversations with friends and seeing blood all over my sister's PJs I know most people have a heavier flow at night so makes sense.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 10/02/2021 22:55

Body form have a number of daytime pads of different absorbencies. They also have a more realistic advert than Always and also seem to stay in place, unlike always.

I think there is equal stigma to ‘heavy’ or ‘super heavy’. Personally, I think the more appropriate description for night pads is ‘bulky’ but I don’t think any marketing team would sign that off. I do wear night pads in the day sometimes by the way, as I like the extra protection but I just feel very bulky.

SamLovesLembasBread · 10/02/2021 23:11

I can see how someone young and inexperienced might be embarrassed that they need pads labelled "nighttime" during the day, but I don't know that I'd say it's an issue of stigma... And even changing the wording to something like "for nights and heavy days" would still potentially "stigmatise" women who are recommended to wear "nighttime" pads based on their size (L, XL).

Rather than bothering about wording on labels, I wish people (educators, parents, marketing?) would focus on teaching teens/pre-teens about their many options, with emphasis on the fact that periods vary widely and that what works for one person might not work for another. Use what's right for you and don't be afraid to keep looking, if what you're using isn't working!

When I got "the talk", there were two options: tampons or pads, and not nearly as many types of either as there are now. For years, I felt that I was weird for not wanting to use tampons, but I still just did what felt right for me. Come to find out, there are many of us who prefer pads. I expect that the modern girl, with the help of the Internet, may learn a lot sooner that she's not weird for having her personal set of preferences.

(The larger pads are a godsend when you have a heavy flow and are prone to flooding. Sometimes some of us really need the extra coverage to catch a sudden rush. Improved absorbency in smaller-sized pads can only do so much!)

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/02/2021 23:14

A night pad lasts me about 40 minutes before I need to change it. Also as I am tall they are far too short.

Different length pads make sense. A size 8 woman and a size 18 woman would benefit from different length pads - much better selection that we have now. Especially pads that have have shaped ends. And it’s not really Fanny size but bigger butts and thighs that can make the shaped ones uncomfortable to wear. I’ve been both sizes and my usual pad at a smaller dress size was useless when I was a bigger and vice versa.
MaLarkinn · 10/02/2021 23:16

You have way too much time on your hands.

showmethegin · 10/02/2021 23:20

Yeah I don't get this. I wear night pads in the day a lot especially as I've worked from home for a year as I just wear what's comfiest and what I feel most secure in.

Surely that's what everyone does? You just buy what you like? I buy a shampoo that says it's for thin hair; I haven't got thin hair I just like it.

Yes to choice and trying different ones, I found Always a bit scratchy and preferred Kotex or Bodyform. I mostly use cloth pads now but have some disposable pads that I would use on occasion if away from home when will I need those again. I have a mooncup but prefer the pads.
MustardMitt · 10/02/2021 23:25

I was all prepared to scoff at your suggestion @DwangelaForever, however I remember how mortified I was as a pre-teen who not only started her periods but also needed the night time pads. Irrational of course, but at 11 lots of things embarrassed me that I wouldn’t even blink at now.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 11/02/2021 00:23

For anyone that has super heavy periods (I only ever used pads as overflow) you go for the longest ultra heavy super absorbent, and don't really give a fuck what they're called.

Fefifobum · 11/02/2021 01:42

Count yourself lucky, when I was needed of a pad it was just one choice really and one size did all. You just wore what fitted and they did although bad some months but you got by.
Oh how I was amazed when the revolutionary Bodyform pad shaped like a humpback whale landed on the shelves you could wear it one way during the day and turn it the other at night or at least I did, simples.
Now there is too much choice people moan!
