Lying on linked in

I realise it’s not the worst thing in the world and many people exaggerate on social media but linked in is a bit different as it’s used for networking and searching for jobs.

My ex boss has listed her job working here as deputy director of xyz when she was “manager”. Our job roles are quite hierarchical and called the same across the profession so there’s a difference between what’s on her linked in cv and the truth with the name of the organisation on it. She actively uses the site to search for temp contracts and it doesn’t sit comfortably with me that she’s openly lying. Is this just what people do? I’m probably too honest and naive.

If it doesn't affect you then I would just roll my eyes and get on with my life tbh. As long as the duties listed and qualifications are relevant to the roles she is applying for then it doesn't really matter what she put as her title. Presumably employers will realise if they request a reference anyway.

It would only affect me if we went for the same job as it would look like she’s more senior when actually we’re the same but I’ve got more experience as I’ve now been doing it longer. I’m definitely rolling my eyes. Pretty much sums up my thoughts on her - ineffective but thinks highly of herself.

I don't know if people routinely lie - I certainly wouldn't bother because it's all out in the open for everyone to see.

But I am sick of LinkedIn because it's become a self-congratulatory wankfest. Two people on my feed today who had taken selfies in the snow, showing off about how they had asked their neighbours if they needed anything before heading to the shops. With the caption 'It's only snow, right?'

Vom. Just do your neighbours a favour without it having to enhance your personal brand.

Just mention it in passing to her manager who would presumably write the refrence.

I noticed a girl on my master's course listed herself as getting a distinction for it. She didnt, only two of us did, me being one and I know the other (plus it's printed in our graduation ceremony booklet). It really irks me because she's so self-righteous and smug anyway. Not going to do anything about it though.

@Nearlythere1 I think that’s it, the smugness Grin

It's silly as she could get caught out but relatively harmless too. I exaggerate loads when applying for jobs, I just wouldn't put it on an open forum!
