What the heck is wrong with these bananas?

I’ve had them for almost 3 weeks and they are just as green as the day I bought them.

This is why I never buy green bananas.

And yes I have put ripe bananas in the bowl with them. I’ve got through several bunches of ripe bananas waiting for these ones to do something!

YABU: be patient, green bananas take months to ripen doncha know.

YANBU: there is something wrong with your bananas.

I had some similar - after 4 weeks I chucked them in the bin, having opened one to check that the inside was still rock solid.

Green bananas are quite common in West Indian cooking. They're meant to be green, and there are various ways to cook them. That's what the OP has, and they won't ripen cos they're not meant to.

The only time that has happened to me was when I'd accidentally bought plantain.

In all my years of banana buying I’ve only once had a bunch like this. Did not ripen. I finally opened then and they were still unripe inside. I felt as though mine they had been frozen in transport. I used one in a blended smoothie type thing - still tasted of hard green unripe banana. I laid them to rest in my food recycling (peeled). Think they’d had a hard life.

Fry them or stick them in a curry. Lots of Caribbean recipes use green bananas. They are different to plantain though.

boredwiththeoldname · 10/02/2021 18:49

Put some ripe tomatoes beside them. Fingers crossed.

@BreakfastOfWaffles

Maybe they are the Benjamin Button of bananas? 😀
No I don't think so but @biggirlknickers do you have a painting of a banana in your attic....?

I had this, from Tesco, a few weeks ago! Just thought they’d got frozen/frosted or something.

TiersForFears1 · 10/02/2021 19:35

They are green bananas, used as a savoury food. My mum used to cook these, I hated them!

Orangedaisy · 10/02/2021 19:37

I had some from Tesco recently too, after a month they have finally gone a bit yellow and are fine to eat.

Bingowin · 10/02/2021 19:38

My DD will ONLY eat green bananas... so I’ll have them 🤣

Happycat1212 · 10/02/2021 20:09

This is why I have now stopped ordering bananas with my online shop, every time I do they have come bright green and never go yellow, it’s happened the last few times so I don’t order them online unless I can pick them myself now

Happycat1212 · 10/02/2021 20:10

And yes mine have been from Tesco’s too 🤔
