To be slightly cheered by everything about the vaccine process

Everything from the science that got us here in the first place,
the booking system-straightforward and I didn’t have to prove I wasn’t a robot 5 times (unlike when booking a test!),
the fact that they are galloping through the categories
and especially the volunteers at the hubs. Cheery, efficient, reassuring.
Brilliant. Well done everyone involved.

It’s great isn’t it

Top stuff from everyone involved

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 10/02/2021 15:37

Yes. There are few things I would say this government have done well but the vaccine roll out is one. We put our eggs in that basket as the way to get normal life back and it feels like it's going to work.

You can also ignore the foreign press and foreign analyses from foreign experts and stick to our good old DM and stay cheerful.

Makes life easier I suppose, we are doing SO great indeed. Hmm

gwenneh · 10/02/2021 15:40

@ShakeTheDisease

I'll gush away, thanks all the same. Delighted there's something the government haven't managed to fuck up yet! (Not for want of opportunities.) Had my first dose last week and couldn't believe how smoothly it all went. Hope you get improvements soon *@gwenneh and @GintyMcGinty* - the more of us who are safe, the safer we all are collectively.
Thank you -- I think it's going to be pretty bad here through the summer but EVENTUALLY we will get around to not relying on grassroots efforts and there will be some provision for everyone.

I just can't get my head around how much money was spent to do this so badly. I'm so glad it's not the case everywhere!

Pukkatea · 10/02/2021 15:40

It's a benefit of having the NHS, which is built in a way to make it perfect for such a rollout, compared to say the US where nothing is centralised. I dislike that the Serco shambles test and trace got the label 'NHS' but the government is taking the credit for the vaccine program, which actually IS being done by the NHS.

Even the WHO have said the 12 week gap looks like the right call. Which is good to hear.

Frequentflier · 10/02/2021 15:41

agree and we talk about this regularly on the good news thread! I don't think the vaccinations are an instant fix and will still be careful once I get it, but by god, they are an absolute triumph for British efficiency. ( am not British so can say this without sounding like Boris).

MRex · 10/02/2021 15:41

I enjoy watching the numbers vaccinated leap up each day, and it's exciting as it gets ever closer to our turn. I was particularly impressed last year when I saw the government put out a contract for vials and several for syringes, it showed that somebody had learned from the global PPE crisis and was prepping the full vaccine solution. Having the system working well bodes very well once boosters are needed; everything from the research to roll-out will only improve from here. Hopefully other countries get up to speed soon too, Israel has done brilliantly and it's pleasing to see GAVI has started deliveries.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 10/02/2021 15:42

What is depressing is that, in my area at least (outer NE London), they seem to have plenty of spare appointments as people are either not booking or cancelling (I assume). I am 66 and got a text today to invite me to book an appointment. I went online and found I was offered tomorrow morning and every appt slot was available! My sister went a week ago (same vaccine venue) and there was no queue, only a few people being vaccinated and lots of idle vaccinators. I am beginning to wonder if enough people will be vaccinated in the end to make the difference required for us to resume some form of normal life/work.

MarshaBradyo · 10/02/2021 15:42

The rollout is great but also the excellent decisions by task force to get working vaccines

Good call. Some people thrive on doom and gloom. I'm not one of them. Smile
Nanniss · 10/02/2021 15:42

I'd like to blow a trumpet here for GP Practice Managers. One thing they are really good at is organising vaccination campaigns. They do it every year with the flu vaccinations. They have totally risen to the challenge of the COVID vaccination programme and I'm so proud to be part of our 6 practice network delivering vaccination to our patients.

Anniegetyourgun · 10/02/2021 15:43

Hopefully not too many new recipients of the vaccine will be in a hurry to lick a stranger. I doubt anyone on this thread believes that the moment the jab goes in the dreaded lurgi is thoroughly defeated; of course we still have to be cautious. But it is good, and the rollout is mostly good, and so many keen volunteers stepping up to make it happen is heartwarming. I say that as a miserable old cynic who hasn't even had theirs yet.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 10/02/2021 15:43

That said, I am very, very happy that my turn has come.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 10/02/2021 15:43

Also brilliant that the president of the EU has now come out and said they made mistakes with their buying and presuming delivery would be instant

Therefore stopping all this AZ and UK are to blame nonsense

MRex · 10/02/2021 15:44

@Pukkatea - NHS Test and Trace had early struggles, but looks to have been doing really well for many months now (that's why it isn't in the news). Have you seen the stats? www.gov.uk/government/collections/nhs-test-and-trace-statistics-england-weekly-reports

am hopeful that as more people get vaccinated, this ' reluctance 'will disappear. Other reports seem to suggest that uptake is good?
ancientgran · 10/02/2021 15:46

@GintyMcGinty

It's a shambles where I am. (Scotland, Fife)

They are way behind.
They've massively overbooked and are now sending out cancellations
People have been standing in queues for 3-4 hours.
Then turned away cause they've run out.

So jealous of England just now.

I thought Plymouth was bad with the elderly standing outside the football stadium for 90 minutes in the freezing cold. To be fair they said once inside it was OK but apparently younger people were taking off their coats as some of the older people were in such a state with the cold.
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 10/02/2021 15:47

Fantastic that all the predictions from are experts and scientists about how well the vaccines will work are now being proven right. Including how well AZ will work on over 65s. That data from are current vaccination program will be released soon. Which also proves the countries that haven't approved for older people are wrong. Though I do totally understand they would not have had as much data at the time as the UK government was privy too

Damnit, I had a full schedule of stranger-licking booked, too.
peak2021 · 10/02/2021 15:55

My mum is normally the worst person in any medical situation or dealing with any health care professional. After having her first Covid 19 vaccine could not praise the process enough.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 10/02/2021 15:57

I queued outside in the cold and dark for an hour to get mine. But absolutely noone was complaining. Once inside the building k was given a form, and slowly progressed down be corridor filling it in and speaking to various medical professionals until I was sat down with a very cheerful nurse. I asked how late her shift was (it was gone 9pm) and she said that it finished at 9 but whilst there was a queue and vials in front of her, she was going to push on through, just like everyone else.

My second appointment was booked during my 15 min post vaccine observation and off I went. I was thrilled and everyone there seemed really happy. The first nurse I spoke to said she'd been there all day but they swapped the various roles during the day so she wasn't reeling off the same script about how to fill in the form all day Grin

This is the sort of thing the NHS is marvellous at and I am very proud of it. (And will continue to support political parties who value it too)
