To think getting a part time job that's not shift work is near impossible?

Unless you've already worked there full time first? I've done shift work all my life and have gotten several interviews for a better paid role but it's all full time shift work so with two young children I had to turn them down. I think I'll have to change industries altogether if I want a 9-5 job. I finish my degree this year but will I even have any hope then? The obvious job to go to with my degree is full time. The ideal would be 3 days a week, set days.

I would have to pay for nursery fees and after school club so volunteering isn't an option right now. I really don't want to work full time when my kids are young and it's unnecessary financially but I feel like I'm out of options. Would really appreciate any insight.

I think it entirely depends on the sort of work you do. I work in a scientific role and I started my current role at 3 days per week. It was advertised as full time. I interviewed, was offered the job, and then negotiated to work 3 days (I have since worked full time, but at the time I only had 2 days of childcare, plus dh took a day off each week, so that's what I could do). Many of the jobs we advertise for are part-time. In fact, I started a new role (same employer, but I had to interview for it) and it's 4 days a week because that's all they can pay for. There are many jobs that would be part-time, but presumably you have trained for a specific field and you need something suitable for your qualifications, and in your industry, yes, it could be tricky.

Universities usually have a lot of part time workers all within 9-5 hours. See if you can find something where you are currently studying.

Devlesko · 10/02/2021 14:46

Call centres aren't shift work, pt hours usually stop around 8pm, if that's any help.

Findahouse21 · 10/02/2021 14:50

In my experience it's very dependent on the sector that you want to work in. I work in a female dominated role, so part time hours are very common along with flexi working and job sharing. It's something that HR are very used to seeing, so there's lot of support for managers to set it up

I work part time in manufacturing doing admin. I do 8.30-2.30 Monday to Thursday and 9-1 on Fridays. I started straight away doing part time. It's min wage though.

dingoesatemybaby · 10/02/2021 14:54

Both my part time jobs (current and previous) were/are Job shares. So the post is full time but shared between two people.

I think this is more common in the public sector than private. Not sure what your area is but could try looking in public sector organisation? Local council, civil service, police staff etc..

ginnyyu · 10/02/2021 14:59

My part time job is call centre 2 x 12.5 shifts 7.45-20.15 .

I love only having to do 2 days per week I still pick up between 1400-1800 per month depending on weekends worked

Porcupineintherough · 10/02/2021 14:59

Not in my sector. Lots of jobs are advertised as part time or are done as job shares. It depends on the organisation too - fully 3/4 of staff are part time where I work.

Mcmole · 10/02/2021 15:03

As a pp said, try a university. I went straight into a part-time role from the start. Downside is there isn't as much career progression (in my experience) but for me that's fine. I don't live to work.

shinynewapple21 · 10/02/2021 15:37

I think for admin jobs they will advertise for the hours they want and these are the same each week but a lot of roles. Eg retail, care they advertise for something like 20 hours a week but then allocate working hours in a weekly basis, sometimes it's more, sometimes less, they say the 20 hours per week an average and mostly people can't afford to turn down the extra .
It must be a nightmare attempting to organise child care .

Whaleandsnail6 · 10/02/2021 15:42

Do you have any childcare? I switched to night working when my kids were little. 3 x12 hour night shifts a week works well for me and I feel I have more time with them than when I was 8-4 5 days a week. But obviously that only works if you have someone who can care for them overnight and during the day when you're working to get some sleep.

OchreBlue · 10/02/2021 15:48

I've always worked 3 days a week within 9-5pm fixed hours per week in various roles: all in public sector roles or charity sector. Mostly the jobs I've applied for have been advertised as part-time, although I always send an email to see if it can be part time if it's advertised as full time. What industry are you looking for? What sector is your degree likely to lead you towards?

readingismycardio · 10/02/2021 15:52

When I first went into banking I was part time! I loved it!

Unfortunately DP is out the door by 6:30, otherwise I would consider nights!

Am going to try call centres and universities.

Think I just need to keep looking, thanks everyone. I'm going to properly go through everyone's suggestions tonight. Just feeling so disheartened applying to so many things and not getting anywhere. Also might need to branch out, I'm sure I've looked at everything on indeed.

Try your local council. Usually many part time jobs. Good terms and conditions too
