to think that toddler beds are just yet another way of wringing money out of us?

Surely they don't need to go into a small bed before going into a big bed?

My SIL tells me that if I put dd into a big bed she won't be able to generate enough heat to stay warm at night .

Money money money. Everywhere you look there's yet another thing you apparently have to buy in order to raise your kids.

If anyone needs me I'll be down at the river pounding the nappies on the rocks and hanging them in the trees to dry.

i only got toddler bed as a ttime was short on money and got it for 20 pound on e bay gives me long enough to save for decent bed when bit older

Yummers · 01/11/2007 16:23

thank god for this thread. i've been mulling over whether i should get dd a cot bed as she's growing out of her cot at 19 months. i now see how ridiulous i was being!

a single bed has to be the way to go. i suppose i'm nervous that one the rails have gone, anarchy will prevail at bedtime, but we can't keep her behind bars forever i suppose!

IdreamofClooney · 01/11/2007 17:02

I don;t think you are being at all unreasonable, although my DS does have a toddler bed which he loves. It is a fire engine bed and his sleep has improved tons since he got the "nee nah" bed.

I am planning to sell it on when he gets too big for it in three or four years. I did buy a mattress for it but I just got a full size duvet and pillow rather than a toddler one though and I like to tuck him in.

The only draw back I have found is what someone else mentioned - I am too scared to climb in with him as it says it has a 20kg max weight!

imo the only good reason to have a toddler bed is if the room is too small. "won't able to generate enough heat" indeed. what a strange thing to say.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 01/11/2007 17:29

We had a toddler bed for DS due to room size constraints. I don't think it's totally silly, however. I'd put it on a par with small chairs, in a Maria Montessori kind of way, just child-size and cosy.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 01/11/2007 17:30

BTW you don't have to buy the bedding to match the bed. Use normal size or a sewing machine for fitted sheets.

LyraSilverSparklers · 01/11/2007 17:33

Our toddler bed extends as the child grows, so it's not a waste of money imo. They're both still on the smallest setting and they looks so cosy.

LyraSilverSparklers · 01/11/2007 17:34

Should have said we have two of them. They share a good sized room.

GColdtimer · 01/11/2007 17:36

I think your SIL is barking. I am, ahem, petite, and yet I don't get chilly in my king sized bed, even when I am in it alone.

PippiCalzelunghe · 01/11/2007 17:38

i don't see much point in them either unless the room is small.
dd, 2, is in a cot. I have taken the side off completely a while ago and she's fine. as soon as the house is done we'll go for single. I think they prefer it, it's so much more snug and you can play in it a lot better.

BroccoliSpears · 01/11/2007 19:21

So, those beds that grow... does the matress grow too? How? Not that I want to get one, but have always wondered.

The mattress (toddler bed sized) comes with two extra bits to be inserted into the gaps when you extend the bed to the second and third sizes.

crunchie · 01/11/2007 19:30

I got my dd's extendable beds form IKEA. They have simple foam matresses ad add an extra block and which tie together as they get bigger.

DD1 is now 8 and she still has another extension to go!! DD2 is 6 and it still on a small setting!!

I am planning DD1's new room when she is 10 sith a daybed and a trundle bed underneath (for sleepovers) so we only have to last another 16 months!!

TBH £100 for a small bed that lasted 8 years is PK for me

HOWEVER I wouldn't normally buy one, except these were cute!!

LyraSilverSparklers · 01/11/2007 19:31

Mine are from Ikea too Crunchie. Which ones have you got? Mine are the high-ended steel framed ones.

pukkapatch · 01/11/2007 19:43

none of the stuff we are supposed to need, is actually necessary. not even cots. let alone something like a toddler bed.
yes, they are nice to have. but not even close to essential.

my friends boys both sleep in a double bed, and have done so since they got rid of their cot.
babies used to be put in drawers! a pillow used as a mattress in a laundry basket would make a perfectly adequate bed for a baby. a mattress on the floor would be perfectly reasonable low bed for toddler, child of any age, adult etc.

melpomene · 01/11/2007 20:01

Not necessary, but save space and can be useful. DD1 used hers for 3 years and has now moved onto a cabin bed, passing the toddler bed onto DD2 who will use it for at least 2 years.

Another big plus of a toddler bed is that smaller bedding takes up less space in the washing machine, which is especially important if you have a bedwetter. You can machine wash a cotbed duvet at home, but not a full size single one.

JARM · 01/11/2007 20:10

Not necessary, but we have 2.

DD's room isnt overly big, and both of my girls were out of their cots by 16mnths due to being little climbers and I didnt feel a single bed would be the way to go.

As it is, at ages 3 and 2, they can stay int their toddler beds for a while yet, and then I can buy bunk beds for them.

DD1's bed will get sold on ebay (its pink!) and dd2's (pine) will be used by DS (due this month) when he is outgrows the cot.

The girls both have fitted cotbed sheets on their beds, but full size single duvets for the winter months.

haychEebeeJeebees · 01/11/2007 20:24

Most definitely.

Offensive waste of money.

Didnt have a moses basket either. Straight in the cot for my 2, then straight in a bed as early as possible (18months mine were) or as soon as they are able to climb in and out safely.
