To wish I had shares in the hotels providing quarantine

£1750 for ten days?

I get three meals a day, need for security, maybe £200 for the Covid tests and transport in a taxi, but even then it must be £125 a night for the room. Even allowing for a deterrent effect seems excessive

Are the hotel owners Tory donors?

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/02/2021 17:23

I was thinking the same.

Is it a bail out for the travel industry by stealth?

swg1 · 09/02/2021 17:26

I imagine they also have patrols to make sure people stay in their rooms, PPE supplied to all staff, people coming in to do tests, entire room needing sterilising on changeover..

When you've got to be really incredibly careful with infection control it gets expensive!

Sprig1 · 09/02/2021 17:27

I bet you don't considering that may be the only income that the hotel has had for a long time.

titchy · 09/02/2021 17:32

Shares in a company that's had no income for almost a year and is only now able to fill some of its hotels - no thanks!

ssd · 09/02/2021 17:33

There will be a tory donor behind this somewhere, someone is getting rich off this.

Covidcorvid · 09/02/2021 17:34

Will there be that much uptake for them? I imagine most people just won’t go to the red list countries or won’t come back to the U.K. if already there?

Plonque · 09/02/2021 17:34

Are you joking? They haven't made a single penny for a whole year with rent, staff and fees to pay - regardless! Hmm

I'm guessing this "fee" won't all be for the hotel either, Boris will be eyeing up a good portion of it I bet.

Alwaysandforeverhere · 09/02/2021 17:36

That doesn’t include testing though does it. You need to pay privately for three tests outside of the hotel costs. A test 72 hours before entering the U.K. and two tests once in the U.K.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/02/2021 17:36

PPE yes but no housekeeping.

Quids in I reckon. Tory donor is right.

Ch3rish · 09/02/2021 17:36

Do you know which hotels they are? You can buy shares online so nothing stopping you having a punt on them.

ChonkyChook · 09/02/2021 17:38

If anyone wants a referral to a share app I can end one. We both get a free random share.

I'm off to look at the share prices. If it's low now might be worth a punt.

ChonkyChook · 09/02/2021 17:38

How no housekeeping? Yes it won’t be every day room tidying, but it’ll be deep cleans between guests
katscamel · 09/02/2021 17:40

What if you haven't got that sort of money...I escaped from a N.African country last year after having worked there for 6 months and not been paid (dodgy company....). There no way I would have had that sort of money and neither would I know anyone else who'd have it spare either.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 09/02/2021 17:43

It won’t put people off travelling if it’s too cheap. Seems a fair price given what will be needed by staff to ensure people actually quarantine.

peak2021 · 09/02/2021 17:45

@katscamel actually I hadn't considered what will be done for those who cannot afford to pay, perhaps some of the cost is to cover defaulters.

@Ch3rish I'd like to know which ones so there is transparency as to whether or not they are Tory donors.

I think it’s nothing compared to the lack of customers they’ve had over the last year!

My aunt was a chemical engineer before she retired. She took part of her pay and retirement packed in shares.

She worked for Astra Zeneca........

MorrisZapp · 09/02/2021 17:48

How much would you expect to pay for a hotel room with meals in the UK?

I don't think it's that expensive.

CoatesCat · 09/02/2021 17:50

These costs are in line with what my friend had to pay for her quarantine in New Zealand. Its not just to cover the hotel costs its also for the quarantine system. Setting up the website for people to book their quarantine places, admin staff to book the transport etc

peak2021 · 09/02/2021 17:51

£84 per night last time I stayed in one, including breakfast. A city centre hotel in the UK that had a swimming pool.

@katscamel I think that if you can't afford it straight away the Government pay, but you have to pay it back. I am sure I read that somewhere.

I couldn't imagine being in a Travelodge or Premier Inn for two weeks not being allowed out of the room. They are so small, great for a night or two, but not two weeks. I'll stay at home.

SeasonFinale · 09/02/2021 17:54

If they are hotels near major airports then usually they would be full of travellers and making far more money. Infact they have said the £1750 includes 2 tests. That takes it closer to £100 a day including meals. Most airport hotels are over that a night without food. No other people will be staying at the hotels and indeed the whole point is to deter travel. So no they will not be raking it in . (And no, I am not a hotel owner or shareholder).

Darbishire27 · 03/03/2021 23:31

I believe it's done at cost price. Hotel accommodation, all food, welfare provision, security staff at airport and hotel, PPE, rooms empty for 3 days between stays, transport, booking portal and customer support, health care for guests etc all has to be factored in. I'd guess hotels are only willing to do it because normal hospitality business has gone away.

SnackSizeRaisin · 03/03/2021 23:51

It costs more than 1750 - the government subsidise it. The cost includes the tests, transfer and security staff. The hotels are getting 60-75 per night

SnackSizeRaisin · 03/03/2021 23:57

I think anyone who chooses to go abroad to work in the middle of a Pandemic takes this risk really... this was discussed for weeks before they brought it in so hopefully not too surprising for people. I'm sure exceptions are made for desperate cases anyway
