Having coil fitted

Hello

I didn't know where to post this.

I'm having the coil fitted in a couple of weeks, I have a history of recurrent miscarriages and endometriosis which is out off control at the moment (had surgery in July, still bleeding very heavy, 7-12 day periods, anaemia).

My consultant recommended the coil as I had a blood clot from the pill, the injection stopped my periods and took me 18 months to fall pregnant after stopping which isn't ideal and the the implant made me bleed constantly. The consultant was meant to book me in to do it at the hospital but then I chased them up after 3 months to hear I'd "accidentally" been discharged so I'm having it at my GP.

I've never had a vaginal birth or any birth for that matter, she warned me it's going to hurt and now I'm scared? I don't know why, I've had countless internals, surgeries, 3 tattoos, smear test and I'm also having a smear test at the same time as coil fitting as it's due but it's just the way she said it will "really hurt" and it's giving me anxiety leading up to it.

Can anyone advise here x

I had mine changed a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t great but so worth it for the 5 years of no worry! I had no periods for whole time, loved it. Having it out was worse than the new one going in but my strings had got lost so they had to ‘fish’ for it 😂 10/10 would recommend and will have a coil until I want to have children

It really depends on the individual person. I've had three coils fitted and two removed over the years. I've also had two vaginal deliveries, 1 assisted, forceps (no pain relief, now that was a pain I don't every want to experience again) and one non assisted.

Honestly it was unconformable, but in no way, 'oh my god' painful. I appreciate it is different for everyone. Definitely take some paracetamol or ibuprofen about 30 minutes before hand, a clean pair of nickers and a panty liner for any bleeding.

I had one done in December. Was uncomfortable & had about 5 seconds of bad pain & then it was done.

My kids were born via sections.

I don’t have a high pain threshold & took paracetamol an hour before the appointment.

It was no where near as bad as I thought. Wish I’d done it years ago

I'm past menopause now but I still feel jealous that most people who have a Mirena coil have no periods. I did - they weren't anywhere near as heave as I'd suffered for many years (which is why I got the coil) but they were still 'moderate' periods.

I've had 2 coils fitted. Uncomfortable, yes. Painful, no. The second coil I had put in (first wasn't removed at the time, as I'd had a break from contraception) I didn't feel it go in at all. Joked with the doctor about it. Being relaxed definitely helps.

MatildaTheCat · 09/02/2021 13:54

You’ll be fine. I’ve had 5 Mirena coils over the last 25 years and apart from the last one it was always uncomfortable with about a minute of really uncomfortable. Deep cramping type of pain. Settled very quickly afterwards.

The most recent one really was painful but I’m menopausal and apparently yet another delight of that is the loss of elasticity hence more painful. Still only very painful for a few minutes and a few hours of cramps.

The bonus has been 25 years of reliable contraception and no bleeding at all. Ever. Not everyone is so lucky but it’s 100% worth trying.

I'm currently waiting for an appointment to have my 2nd mirena coil removed & a 3rd inserted. From what I can remember, it's like a painful smear but doesn't last long at all. Cramps & bleeding for a few days afterwards, then...happy days! Don't worry too much - it'll be fine!

CastleCrasher · 10/02/2021 07:52

Stay relaxed and it'll be fine. I chatted to the doctor throughout mine, exactly as I do with the smear. There was literally a split second of "ouch" at one point but that's it.

wishes1111 · 02/03/2021 12:40

Okay I've had it done this morning.

All I've got to say is that it f*cking hurt and my heart rate dropped to 38 bpm so they made me have a bottle of lucozade before I left 🤦🏻‍♀️

Would of thought after many endometriosis type procedures, tattoos etc I wouldn't find it that bad but my whole body was shaking.

Got my smear done at the same time so at least that killed 2 birds with one stone.

Maybe I'm a big wuss 😂 took 2 prescription strength co codamol 30 mins before too.

At home now with hot water bottle and ibuprofen 🥴

I initially had the copper coil and am on my second mirena.
I don't remember any discomfort on insertion - but there was a short-sharp-shock pain when the old one was removed.

Unfortunately I'm one of the few who's periods still last 10 days even with the mirena. The nurse told me it would change my life. It didn't.
Sad

I’m now worrying that I’ve got a food like the channel tunnel as mine didn’t hurt at all!

*foof!
