I fell through the floor

We moved to a house that’s charming, just what we wanted, but trouble has been never ending. The latest thing is a hole in the kitchen floor.
I’d been saying for months (since September?) that there was something wrong with the floor, my DH has been saying, “You’ll only open a can of worms.” It’s worrying me, what else is wrong with it?
He said he’ll take up the lino to see what’s underneath. The lino is trapped under cupboards so it is difficult to remove, it’ll have to be cut, and because it’s thick and spongy it’ll be hard work.
Finally my foot went through the lino, a hole about 30cm sq. That was just after Christmas.
I want to see what’s wrong and put it right, not just paper over the cracks (or board over the hole!). He took the day off today to do things around the house. I did gently suggest the floor could do with being looked at, He found a floorboard which he showed me. (I’m fairly sure it won’t fit.) We never normally row, but fairly major disagreement ensued. When he said, “Well, do you want us to get someone in to do it?” I said “Yes.”
Anyway the upshot of it was that he’s not done anything today, except move some logs, and sit smoking in the garage, and is now sitting reading in front of the fire in the living room. He works hard, I don’t begrudge him time relaxing, but I think I’ve been quite patient.
Should I go ahead and book someone to come and look at it.
YABU=don’t get someone in. YANBU =if you think I should.

  1. Cut the lino to look at it properly 2. Decide whether you think you need professional help or whether you and/or DH can fix it.

Ye gods, why are you waiting for DH to do the former, and asking an online forum what you should do for the latter? Are you this helpless in everything you do?!

Notusuallydown · 08/02/2021 19:47

Well I helped DH pull up the lino.
The previous owner had removed several tiles and had cemented over the hole. The floor underneath seems to be chipboard, which had collapsed. It was very damp which might have caused the problem with the tiles. (The previous owner obviously saw us coming...)

We've put a board over the hole and recovered it with the lino.
The whole floor will need to be sorted. I think probably (fingers crossed) the joists are ok. It will probably need most of the kitchen cabinets to be replaced because the floor, obviously, goes under them. They are in poor condition so won't really put up with being moved around I don't think. We were putting off revamping the kitchen until there's more money around.

@Dogsarehairy

can't you look at it or is it a balls and penis task only?
^This. If I waited until I had a man in the house to look at things then I'd be living in a wreck.

I'm not helpless, DH has 'his' areas of expertise.
I do the accounts and organise everything from oil delivery to tracking down his shoes (size 14, difficult to find!).
He gets extremely offended if I try and muscle in. It makes for an easier life if I agree, (and then do what I think) on this occasion it wasn't possible. It could have been a major expenditure, which should have been discussed.

And actually as my right arm doesn't work properly actually doing it myself would have been virtually impossible.

Have you located the source of how the chipboard got damp or was the Lino thrown over to hide I’m guessing water spillage and not leak of some sort

Roadtohades · 08/02/2021 19:59

We decided to get new flooring for our kitchen when we had new units, and it such a good thing that we did. When the men lifted the old floor covering they found that the dishwasher had been leaking, probably for a very long time, and all of the joists were rotten. If we hadn't decided to have new flooring, it was only a matter of time before we would have fallen through the floor into the cellar below! Do get this investigated properly, OP asap.

Ameliablue · 08/02/2021 20:04

I would suggest that he pull the lino up first to assess. Only then can be decides if he can fix it properly or if it needs someone in.

Sparklfairy · 08/02/2021 20:59

He gets extremely offended if I try and muscle in.

But why? It's your home too. Why aren't you allowed an opinion?

FOJN · 08/02/2021 21:15

He gets extremely offended if I try and muscle in.

And yet you still had to gently suggest the floor needed looking at. Having his area of expertise is fine but failing to do anything and then getting offended if someone else does is not fine.

Go get a Stanley knife and cut the lino and have a look. I'm also astounded at the learned helplessness on the thread. Good term pp.
