What’s a high thread count for bedding?

Sorry for the boring thread. I want to get some really nice bedding and have been looking at the options but obviously the higher the thread count the pricier it gets. I just wondered, how good is good? Would it be super fabulous to get a 1000 thread count or would I still love it if I got 500 thread count? Also, has anyone got any nice recommendations? Our room is an ice blue colour so really we want white, light blue or grey. Thanks.

Oops, put this in the wrong thread. Maybe I’ll get some replies...

I have 600 from Soak & Sleep which I love.

I have the M&S 750 thread-count supima cotton sheets (duvet and pillowcases white and fitted sheet in grey), and I adore them! Because of the high count, they have a sheen to them, and are very soft, and breathable. One of the best buys I've ever made, imo.

I have 600 from Dusk which are incredible. Only got them at Christmas and got another set last week because I can't bear to change them!

I have a fitted bed sheet which is 1000 threadcount and I love it. Thick, smooth and really good quality. I got it from TKMaxx for about £15, which was a bargain conpared to the 300 threadcount sheets I had seen in a bedding shop.

1000 from John Lewis

Thanks, I’ll take a look in all those places. I must be getting old as I’m really excited about my bedding purchases!! 😂😂

The sweet spot is about 400-600.

Those really high thread counts usually use 3 and 4 ply cotton and it’s misleading to call it 1000.

If you like cool crisp sheets go for percale (I do). If you like them warmer and softer then sateen (or soft and silky as John Lewis call them) or brushed cotton (yuk).

What Parlez said. There is a sweet spot between about 400 and 600. With cotton percale, the weave makes it impossible to go much higher unless they inflate the thread count by counting the thread ply. Sateen weave allows for a higher thread count, but by 1000 TC you are still likely to be getting an inflated count.

This is a good article explaining the nitty gritty: www.google.lu/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/blog/good-thread-count-for-sheets/amp/

“When it comes to thread count,” Tannen said, “most people forget that the quality of threads is far more important than the quantity." Andrés Modak, co-CEO and co-founder of Snowe, noted, “Luxury sheets aren't simply the result of a high number; first you need the highest quality yarns, expertly woven.”

Rather than looking for a super high thread count, check to make sure it’s made with long-staple or extra-long staple Egyptian cotton.

Can I recommend TK Maxx for good value high thread count sheets?
