To ask what YOU think a high salary is?

Going off the back of the salary thread and the savings threads. A lot of people are aghast at the wages and say that ppl are lying!

What do you think is a high wage for say a woman in their 30's?!
Would you say differently for a man?

I think anything over 100k is a high wage for either. 25-35k would be low imo and anything in the middle would be a good salary.

@Updatemate

It is all relative too those of you from north probably don't understand that most of us in london pay more for our mortgage payments or rent than what you are saying is a good salary. I pay 40k a year just for my 2 bed flat in central London.

Could you be more condescending?

The north isn't one massive conglomerate of cheap housing. I pay more for my mortgage now than my rent in London.

This thread is full of people, probably 50-100 people on here making a comment about how 35k or 40k is a high/good salary and not understanding how/why there are people on here saying 80 or 100k. It's obviously very strongly a regional thing.

I'm just pointing out the regional difference is very large. Not trying to be condescending. My family is from Manchester, although I was born outside UK.

Totally dependent on area of the country

paintedpanda · 07/02/2021 15:33

@minimummies

Under 25k to me would be extremely low and I would expect it to be a part time role if I'm honest.
Newly qualified (with 0-2 years experience) healthcare workers (of which I am one) on a band 5 salary are on less than 25k. Even ones with a good few years experience are on what you consider "low".
Updatemate · 07/02/2021 15:40

Anything over £150k I think. If you earn £150k you pay nearly £60k in tax and take home just over £7k a month. That’s obviously a lot of money but doesn’t seem that much when you consider the vast gross salary.

And that beautiful illustrates my earlier point. Our household income is nowhere near £150k, but we do bring in almost £7k per month, due to salary split meaning we pay less tax than if only one of use were earning that.

ktp100 · 07/02/2021 15:42

I would say under £25 is low, 25-40 is ok to average, 40-75 is good and over 75 high.

It all depends on where you live though, really.

wowier · 07/02/2021 15:45

Wages have definitely stagnated, what I considered a good salary or mid one hasnt really changed in 10 yrs plus nor have the salaries for those roles.

Zenithbear · 07/02/2021 15:46

Over 50k is a high salary.

wowier · 07/02/2021 15:48

140k is 7k take home.

I take the point about tax but you still need to bring in a total of 110k in order to get nearly 7k.

Updatemate · 07/02/2021 15:53

We do. That's considerably short of £140 though!

Donoteatthekittens · 07/02/2021 15:54

Between us we earn around £100k outside London plus rental incomes. We aren’t rich but we live comfortably with a small mortgage.

DeloresWw · 07/02/2021 15:54

Over 200k impresses me.

wowier · 07/02/2021 15:57

Oh yes but that's compared to 1 person earning 140k, 2 earning that total would be over 8k income.

Fagey · 07/02/2021 15:58

[quote minimummies]Anyone I know in less than 25k in their 30's works part time!! If they were in their 20's and starting out in a career then yes full time at

wowier · 07/02/2021 15:58

Basically 2 people need to work particularly when you factor in NI & employer pension contributions

Updatemate · 07/02/2021 16:03

I know pretty much none of my friends wages.

You see, I consider that odd! I know most of my friends wages, or at least ballparks. I also know there mortgages and savings. We do tend to talk about money and are quite open. We usually talk in relation to going for promotions or new jobs etc. Also lots of my friends are NHS so bandings are fairly obvious or other public sector such as teachers and social workers.

Being in the NHS means I know most people's wages though!

Jangle33 · 07/02/2021 16:04

£200k plus. Then I think you could be able to afford reasonable size house plus private school fees.

wowier · 07/02/2021 16:04

"There are only 321,000 people in the UK earning more than £150,000 a year."

"nearly 40 percent, live within the London area."

"HMRC data shows that just 31,000 people in the UK, out of a population of over 60 million, are in the top 0.1 percent income bracket, earning more than £1 million a year"

This is to put figures into context. Obviously this doesn't include self employed.

Frozenintime · 07/02/2021 16:05

Anything over 30k

wowier · 07/02/2021 16:05

A big problem is house prices so younger people need to earn a vast amount to buy a basic London property whereas lots of older people have made that on property.

Passthewinebottle · 07/02/2021 16:12

I did a tax return for a client last year, & including their bonus, they earned £1.4mil. They are 39 & not even at the top of the company. I mean what sort of job would ever warrant that kind of remuneration?! Crazy.

Worthless90s · 07/02/2021 16:14

@minimummies- Your post is just asking to cause trouble! It’s a typical I want to show much wealth I have but whilst doing little work or few hours! Good on you.. we all die and take nothing with us so what the bloody hell does it matter what people earn.

These kind of posts are just set up to aggravate people & pit people against each other Angry

wowier · 07/02/2021 16:14

@Passthewinebottle partner at a MC law firm would earn that & more.

Passthewinebottle · 07/02/2021 16:18

@wowier Really? Wow that is crazy. My 2 highest earning clients are both high up in software.

lalafafa · 07/02/2021 16:19

6 figures, most of my friends earn that, even a friend who's a teacher and her husband, tech job have a combined income of nearly £100,000
