To ask what YOU think a high salary is?

Going off the back of the salary thread and the savings threads. A lot of people are aghast at the wages and say that ppl are lying!

What do you think is a high wage for say a woman in their 30's?!
Would you say differently for a man?

I think anything over 100k is a high wage for either. 25-35k would be low imo and anything in the middle would be a good salary.

The typical jobs round here pay minimum wage or just over. So there are thousands of people working long hours for under £25k. Some of it is in rough conditions with minimal rights and employment perks (only what the law makes compulsory). Producing food, looking after the elderly and others with high care needs, cleaning etc. So it makes me mad when I hear these people accused of being lazy and unproductive (not on this thread) because they aren't on huge salaries or need a bit of help with their (huge) rent. Some people are utterly clueless as to what "low income" or "poor" really is. If people really think eg £50k is a low wage no wonder they have so little sympathy for people who are struggling on less than half that.

Dodododahdahdah · 07/02/2021 12:14

“Alright salary” 35-50k
“Good salary” 50-65k
“Really good salary” 65k plus

(South east, I earn about 30k)

“Earns ok money” 25-35k

“Doesn’t earn that much” 20-25k

“Earns shit money” under 20k

user85963842 · 07/02/2021 12:15

@minimummies it's ignorant if the stats don't stack up against your opinion, £35k is above average in the UK, so to call it low is ignorant and ill informed.

Below average for what though? If course it's not below average for all jobs but if we are talking jobs requiring a degree in london then yes it is below average.

The question was what do you consider high? I would think most people wouldn't include people working at Tesco or in unskilled jobs in economically disadvantaged areas when talking about high paying jobs.
@Ideasplease322 £35k is not below average
You are right, it is average for a man in his thirties, and slightly above average for Woman.

I was thinking more of the following Discussion which focused on salaries in the £20ks - sorry I had forgotten about OP’s opening post

The phrase low pay does seem to offend, 5at was the point I was clumsily making

"Spending all your money on housing in an expensive area is like buying a Ferrari. A car within your budget will equally achieve the.."

What car you drive is more of a free choice than leaving all your friends and family and everything you've ever known though I'd say.

lioncitygirl · 07/02/2021 12:24

Anything above 100k-ish - I’m in central London.

AnnaFiveTowns · 07/02/2021 12:28

Newly qualified teachers and nurses earn about 22,000. You need a reality check OP and to stop being so arrogant and insensitive.

minimummies · 07/02/2021 12:30

@AnnaFiveTowns and USUALLY newly qualified teachers and nurses are in their early 20's!! I specifically said a person in their 30's. And yes I am aware of mature students etc etc.

This. Outside London, most jobs pay about 20k. Having "10 years of a career under your belt" means bugger all these days. There are few entry level jobs and also few lines of progression. 20k jobs require huge levels of skills and experience, and expect you to be taking ridiculous levels of responsibility for the wages. This is supposed to be somehow empowering of the general population, even in a time when the average house price in the country is over 200k.
Comefromaway · 07/02/2021 12:33

My husband is a teacher, aged 46 and is a head of subject. He’s on slightly over £30k.

Ideasplease322 · 07/02/2021 12:34

£22,000k is below average though, and teachers can expect that to increase every year. Most NQTs will be In Their early twenties and at that age Average salaries are much lower. Unless someone is changing career, a teachwould expect to be on a higher salary by the time they reach their thirties,

Before I get jumped on I agree teachers aren’t paid enough. But most in professional careers endure a few years on lower salaries as we learn the ropes - it’s the promise of better money that keeps us going.

kowari · 07/02/2021 12:34

Saying you don't consider yourself to be on a low income doesn't mean an emotional response or that the person is offended, just a difference in opinion. £20k may be much lower than the median, but it is a very common salary isn't it?

Inpersuitofhappiness · 07/02/2021 12:35

40k+ a good salary.
80k+ id say is a high salary for 1 person.

Though I gather average salary is somewhere between 25-30k. I can't see how that wouldn't be tough with mortgage and rent prices. If you're a household of two making that I guess its easier though.

MarthaWashingtonsFeralTomcat · 07/02/2021 12:40

@WowIlikereallyhateyou it's unheard of for me, with lots of friends all in our 30s. In their 50s maybe - probably a few of our parents earn close to 100k or just over.

Who are all these people you know on 100k plus in the East Midlands?

Jsnn · 07/02/2021 12:43

100k+ is quite exceptional even in london. I am in a high income career and 100k+ is very difficult to achieve. Its basically just executives and some very highly skilled niche jobs that pay that much.

Now of course I mean for full time perm employees.

Lots of contractors and business owners out there earning that.

Thomasina79 · 07/02/2021 12:53

Worked most of my life in admin for NHS, mostly full time in london. Never earned more than £24,000. £30,000 would be flipping amazing!

Donoteatthekittens · 07/02/2021 13:14

The full time salary on minimum wage is around 17k. Millions of people earn the minimum wage.

I am in the civil service and recruited for a £20k admin job recently. Over 500 applications. Looking at the jobs where I live (south-east) most of the jobs pay under £9 an hour. TAs, cleaners, retail, call centres etc.

NuniaBeeswax · 07/02/2021 13:19

I'm 36 this year and would live like a queen on £25k.

dchange · 07/02/2021 13:20

I will say anything above £75k is high. Taking home £4K a month is substantial. Would it meet your needs is another question. But let's stick your primary question 😁

DragonMamma · 07/02/2021 13:38

I’m in Wales and mid 30s.

I would say that a high earner around here would be anything over £70k. My perception may be skewed as most of the women I know/am most friendly with are around this and live great lives.

Devlesko · 07/02/2021 13:45

It's relative to how much you spend.
We spend next to nothing, so anything above about 26k is a large household income, to us.

Jsnn · 07/02/2021 13:51

It is all relative too those of you from north probably don't understand that most of us in london pay more for our mortgage payments or rent than what you are saying is a good salary. I pay 40k a year just for my 2 bed flat in central London.

If I was living somewhere with a 500 a month mortgage then that would change a lot. If we earn 100k as household we are still spending over 50% of our net income on housing which is very high.

Annabell80 · 07/02/2021 13:55

25k would be very decent to me and not low ar all. A high salary I suppose anything over 35.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 07/02/2021 13:55

Your quote is from someone else, I didn’t actually say that so please do not incorrectly quote me!

I know an awful lot of people who earn way over 100k, most of them live in a specific area which is quite an expensive one. Some work out of london and commute, some have their own businesses, some are med professionals. There are loads.
