To ask what YOU think a high salary is?

Going off the back of the salary thread and the savings threads. A lot of people are aghast at the wages and say that ppl are lying!

What do you think is a high wage for say a woman in their 30's?!
Would you say differently for a man?

I think anything over 100k is a high wage for either. 25-35k would be low imo and anything in the middle would be a good salary.
@Mynextname the prime minister’s salary is £79k
This is misleading. £79k is in addition To salary as an mp which is £82k.

Ideasplease322 · 07/02/2021 07:40

@MaryBoBary

Oh and I'm in my 30s and a ull time TA earning £14k. I must live in a cardboard box right?
Mary how many hours a week do you work? Have you checked your hourly rate is above the minimum wage?
BML123 · 07/02/2021 07:49

This is all relative and depends on your perception, where you live and your social circle. Also I would anticipate your total family income (single v both earners). My OH has great delight in keeping telling me I am in top 1% if you look at tax payers figures. However I am the single earner, we have a modest comfortable lifestyle and little debt. I compare us to probably like most people in the area we live who are mortgaged up to the eyeballs with 2 expensive cars on finance which makes me feel less well off if not decidedly more sensible!

ufucoffee · 07/02/2021 07:55

Depends where you live. I know a lot of people over 50 who work full time and earn under 25k. I earn more than that but under 35k and among my friends I'm considered to be on a good salary

theviewfromhalfwaydown · 07/02/2021 07:57

I’m a Special needs TA working 31 hours a week for 12.5k a year. The highest I’ve ever wasn’t was 23k working 4 12 hour night shifts a week. I honestly thought I was loaded. Sad

theviewfromhalfwaydown · 07/02/2021 07:57

Earned not wasn’t.

IdesMarchof · 07/02/2021 08:00

Over £80k

Coffeyy · 07/02/2021 08:01

I’d say over 50k is a high wage, I’m in the south east

Updatemate · 07/02/2021 08:03

I think it's sector dependent. I'm NHS, not doctor and anything band 8 or above (£38k) is really quite rare so I think my£40k is pretty good.

DH however is in IT and £40k is low for that industry.

Oblomov21 · 07/02/2021 08:04

£80k is high, to me.

stillonthattightrope · 07/02/2021 08:05

@minimummies

Under 25k to me would be extremely low and I would expect it to be a part time role if I'm honest.
A newly qualified nurse would start on just under 25k.
coffeeandgin26 · 07/02/2021 08:06

I count anything above 30k as good as that's what our combined salary is in our family. £50k abs above would be in 'woah' category

Oblomov21 · 07/02/2021 08:06

Actually I correct that. Anything over £50k is very good.

Mnusernc · 07/02/2021 08:12

Salaried jobs don't make you rich. I used to think friends earning 100k were loaded but house prices mean that's easily eaten up in a normal family home.
The rich people I know have been gifted substantial amounts of property and investments. They do work but their salaries make up a small percentage of their income. Plus a lot of holidays, school fees etc come from their families. There's absolutely no way to compete by working hard in a job!

Pyewhacket · 07/02/2021 08:15

Depends where you live, what you do. your seniority and the industry you work in. I live in South West London, just south of the river so I would say that anywhere north of £250k is a good salary altho I know people who earn more. Living in London I would say a minimum of £50k. But other parts of the country are just as costly.

PugInTheHouse · 07/02/2021 08:16

I dont think £35k is low outside of London. Under £25k is low IMO.

I am SE and would say that £45/50k is a very good salary. I would say over £60k is high.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/02/2021 08:18

Anyone who pays 40% tax is a high earner in my book (even just on say the top 10% of their earnings). My salary is 17.5K, someone on here said ‘had I thought of going full time’, it is full time!

PugInTheHouse · 07/02/2021 08:19

NHS band 8 is not £38k. It starts on £45k and goes up to £87k on normal agenda for change salary scales. £38k is bottom of Band 7 (which goes up to £45k) Band 7 would be clinical managers or senior corporate staff so a decent role and a good salary. B8 are senior managers.

tonyharrisonboosh · 07/02/2021 08:20

This is such a twatty thread and shows out of touch people are.

In my region anything above £35k would be considered a high salary. Of course some people earn much more than that but that's in the minority.

I earn £27k for an admin role and that is above average for admin staff in my county. I'm pretty happy with that for the job I do. Lp

Good on people that earn more though!

Londonnight · 07/02/2021 08:20

£20000 would be a high salary to me. I work full time and only get around £14500, so anything higher is a good salary to me.

To the poster who thinks anything under £25000 is a low wage really isn't living in the real world. Many, many people on minimum wage don't get anywhere near this working full time.

Pineapples1980 · 07/02/2021 08:22

£100k is high for London,
£70k high for rest of the country

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/02/2021 08:24

Just to ask is it just housing that’s expensive in London? Or is our food and services deemed more expensive too? I live a decent life in London on no where near 100k

2020BogOff · 07/02/2021 08:24

£25k a low salary. 40% tax band a nice and comfortable salary. Over £100k a high salary.

The issue is that lots of people try and live on one 'comfortable' salary and have DCs and high outgoings which means they are not comfortable. Equally lots of people work part time so again they struggle.

oblada · 07/02/2021 08:27

on the basis of tax thresholds and child benefit tax I would say above 50k is starting to be good/high.
30-40k for someone in their 30s is perfectly good in my view.
I don't view anything as 'low' as so many valuable jobs will not pay more than 20k-30k so value judgement is really not needed.
No I don't think I'd have different views on men and women.

User7458 · 07/02/2021 08:28

Low is under £20k
Average is £30k - £35k
High over 50k
