Starting a new job 6 months pregnant ?

holob · 06/02/2021 21:46

I have just found out I'm pregnant

Very very early days

I am still waiting for my DBS occupational health checks etc could be 1-2 month wait for all that then I have to give 3 non the notice

Potentially I could be 4-5 months pregnant when I start ( plus it's patient facing - covid risk) it's my " dream" job and I really hate my current job.

I'm screwed aren't I

Sorry title is not accurate worse case scenario could be 6 months depending on how long these checks take

I started a job at 14 weeks pregnant. You won't get any enhanced maternity pay (if offered) but you will get maternity allowance (same as SMP)

Have you been offered the job? They cannot rescind the offer due to pregnancy.

dingoesatemybaby · 06/02/2021 21:53

Oh I was the same position as you as well. Found out very early days after I had been offered the job, I still took it as it was a good job (still in same organisation now but moved up so it didn't have any negative effect on my career).

gypsywater · 06/02/2021 21:56

Not ideal but nothing you can do about it really!
Whatever you do, do NOT turn the job down as of course anything could happen with the pregnancy. All the best to you.

jemi01 · 06/02/2021 21:57

@gypsywater yes I was saying this to my partner . As it is such early days ( literally just peed on the stick) nothing is certain .

Buttercupcup · 06/02/2021 21:57

Is this an NHS job? If so if you are staying in the same trust you may still be able to get your full mat pay and they also can’t discriminate due to pregnancy. I have been in an NHS role that required a 3 month notice period but i managed to negotiate this down to 6 weeks which would also help!

holob · 06/02/2021 21:58

@jemi01 are you still taking the job?

gypsywater · 06/02/2021 21:59

I'm currently 6 weeks and have an interview in 3 weeks for an NHS promotion. If I was lucky enough to be offered the job, it would be a June start so 5 months pregnant! But I will be damned if I dont go for a job when there is always the lurking risk of MCs.

holob · 06/02/2021 22:00

@Buttercupcup no I'm private now this new job is nhs . I get rubbish mat pay anyway being private it's just 1 month 90 percent then statutory. I am more worried about covid now abs being clinic based. There's some scope to do home working but I need to be trained up. My current job is phone based from home . I am a nurse but work in quite an alternative role at present.

holob · 06/02/2021 22:01

@gypsywater yes that's true . As I am in so unhappy in this job too I don't fancy being stuck here another 2 years. I do have a toddler also and was quite sick in last pregnancy hopefully this one is ok due to the fact I will have a longer commute too

holob · 06/02/2021 22:02

@gypsywater good luck with your interview !

gypsywater · 06/02/2021 22:02

I mean they're obvs going to be fucked off! But as long as they dont show it then it's not really your problem Grin

holob · 06/02/2021 22:03

@dingoesatemybaby yes I have my offer of employment and pre contract info all the hours I want have been approved ( part time which is great) just waiting on the checks

OP posts:
gypsywater · 06/02/2021 22:03

Defo dont be telling them for a long while yet either

holob · 06/02/2021 22:03

@gypsywater I know what you mean. I have been debating calling the manager and telling them but it's such early days only just missed the period !

OP posts:
holob · 06/02/2021 22:04

@gypsywater ok thanks . If all goes well I'm not sure I will be able to hide it that much as will be my second, I'm certainly not as toned as before ( I previously didn't show until around 7 months )

OP posts:
gypsywater · 06/02/2021 22:05

@holob
I would tell them at 16 weeks. Definitely not earlier.

holob · 06/02/2021 22:06

Many thanks 😊

gypsywater · 06/02/2021 22:07

Best of luck!

Buttercupcup · 06/02/2021 22:07

@holob ahh ok! I am currently on mat leave from the NHS I’m a CNS and I got sent off on covid shielding at 28 weeks as that was the RCOG/trust guidelines at the time (not sure what the rules are at the min this was last may) my trust were proactive in protecting the pregnant staff so try not to worry about that side of things.

holob · 06/02/2021 22:08

@Buttercupcup this is for CNS post too :) yes I believe it's still the same rules but I was worried I wouldn't be up and running by then alone to do clinics from home on the phone.

OP posts:
DittyPL · 06/02/2021 22:09

Legally they cannot discriminate, you will be on probation when you start, but gov jobs in particular have to give very robust and evidence based reasons for failing you- so it's very very unlikely they would be successful in winging it. They might be inwardly annoyed, but hey, that's life, please take the job!

Buttercupcup · 06/02/2021 22:13

@holob good luck I absolutely love my job and can’t wait to get back to it (covid mat leave has had its challenges!) I hope you enjoy it too. I went off quite early on in the pandemic and didn’t have to do any clinics from home as everything was cancelled and the infrastructure wasn’t there for it so I did some audits/rewrote policies and a PhD proposal!
