Halloween is nothing to do with Christianity and it REALLY bugs me that every year without fail you get some bishop or other moaning about people celebrating it.. and how its leading our children astray, or the extremists banging on about it being satanic and encouraging children away from the christian faith!

Hello!!!

Its Halloween, which is infact AKA Samhain to the Pagan population of the country. ITs not evil, its nothing to do with the devil or satan... its Pagan New Year!!!

I use far too many brackets, don't I?

Not TOO north though, Marina, but further North than that . My sister called me a "dirty prod" the other night (she meant it affectionately ).

Christians never used to be so anti-hallowe'en. They are becoming far more superstitious as the decades roll on.

binkleandflip · 02/11/2007 21:14

Serious question - do you think they wish to be seen more 'fundamentalist' these days to keep up with the trend of some other religions (or should I say followers of other religions)

chinwag · 02/11/2007 21:27

I don't think it's a desire to keep up with other religions; I think it a genuine belief. I think Christians are entitled to their opinion, as is everyone, although the Rainbows thing is way over the top IMO.

For me, its the "tricking" that's really got to me - the bricks through windows, etc. I haven't a problem with supervised little ones dressing up and going out collecting for themselves (well, not much, whatever happened to stranger danger, taking sweets from strangers?). Why do adults/nearly adults (16+) feel a need to do it? Is it because they're getting something for nothing?

I don't subscribe to this belief that some have that its "letting the devil into our lives".

binkleandflip · 02/11/2007 21:37

I agree they have a right to their belief but to slip that kind of scary stuff to a child seems a bit sinister tbh.

Anyhoo, like I said, it went in the bin with the other junk mail. If they did want to put the Christian viewpoint of Halloween over to young children I dont think scaremongering was the way to go. DD goes to a C of E school which is right next to the church - the children spend quite a lot of time there and I'm happy to go along with the church's traditions regarding harvest festival/easter/christmas celebrations but that leaflet was a bit much

I think the evangelical extremists are the sort of people who make an unnecessary fuss about Halloween. These are the people who have to go on and on about homosexuality in order to split the church and turn it into their private members' club. They apparently have most of the theological colleges sewn up. It's a crying shame - the whole point of the CofE is that it is a compromise, a broad church that should cater for everyone, from Anglo-cathlolic to evangelical.

I took my son trick and treaking and we stopped at a door who asked us about what Halloween was about. From my childhood it was about fun and family however this religious women did not agree, quite rightly. We grew up and it was about fun as a family together....we are atheists. We lov the fun of Halloween, sorry to those who are offended.
