Have I Run out of time

loulou0987 · 05/02/2021 21:44

I really appreciate you for reading this. I’m 18 stone and 40 years old . I constantly tell myself there is time to turn this around but I have recently realised that I might never be able to sort this out. Am I unreasonable to think I have run out of time??

You definitely haven't run out of time. I am older than you by almost 5 years, and weigh not much less than you.
I have recently started zoom sessions with a really motivational personal trainer. She doesn't judge me, she just tries to help me reach my goals. I have been amazed at how much confidence I have now, because I feel like I am valuing myself by buying the sessions as something just for me (if that makes sense!)
Don't give up! Flowers

Never too late! I wish I'd lost weight younger (I'm mid 30s) as my skin might have bounced back better but being slimmer is new life.

Elle200 · 05/02/2021 22:05

No, you haven't. I'm 12 years older than you and have lost five stones over the last year, with another five to go. It's much harder now to lose than when I was forty, something to do with hormones I believe. Count your calories, join a weight loss thread on here, and drink plenty fluids. Best of luck, you can do this!!

Theres always time. My dad is in his 60s and he has set himself onto a diet of basically just removing sugar. Anything that contains more than its natural sugar and he avoids it. He has also removed bread, and switched to sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes.
He does 15-30 minutes exercise for 2 days and then an exercise free day, then 2 days again.

He is amazed at how fast he is losing weight. He has lost a stone in about a month. This is after many many diet attempts throughout the years.

If he can do it, so can you. Don't give up!

MinesAPintOfTea · 05/02/2021 22:16

My dad lost 5 stone between 59 and 62. You can do it. It might be harder, but it is always possible.

Lockheart · 05/02/2021 22:18

It is always possible to lose weight. It might be more difficult, but not impossible. You can definitely still turn this around!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 05/02/2021 22:31

Nope. I had a colleague who at 40 Went from 20st to 10st in 13 months. Slimming world and exercise

whatkatydid2013 · 05/02/2021 22:32

It’s hard but I think it is well worth trying. I’m almost 41 and I was 18st 10 at the start of lockdown. Currently I’m 15st 10. I’m a bit stuck at the moment but I’ll keep plugging away and while I may never be slim I’ll be less overweight and even just losing the 3st will make a difference to my health. I really struggle as I’m very much an emotional eater and the bad habits are so tough to break. Start small & if you have a bad day or week start again. Also don’t think it’s pointless if you are going slowly or if you gain a little bit back. Good luck x

partyatthepalace · 05/02/2021 22:33

No of course it isn’t.

Ragan Chattetjees Loose weight Feel Great is a (genuinely) excellent book BTW

fatternotfitter · 05/02/2021 22:35

No - I lost 90lb aged 45. I have due to lockdown put some a lot back on but I intend to lose it over the next few months.

Happymum12345 · 05/02/2021 22:47

44 here and over the last year I’ve lost weight. Size 18 to size10/12. You can do it. It hasn’t been any harder at this age than when I’ve tried before. I don’t ever weigh myself so I don’t obsess. I also don’t count calories, do the same reason. You know how to lose weight. Eat less & move more.

HelloThereMeHearties · 05/02/2021 22:50

Only 40? You're a baby! You could be done and dusted in two years. Then you'll only be 42, and you'll have turned your life around!

I'm 55, and over the last couple of years I've lost four stone. It can be a slog, but it's so much better than slipping backwards.

FranklymydearIdogiveadamn · 05/02/2021 23:06

You are still very young! I'm mid 40's and as of today have lost 3 stone, I started my weight loss journey mid October last year so its been kind of quick. I've done it through calorie counting with lots of walking and have found it quite easy. Remain positive and you've got this! X

lastqueenofscotland · 05/02/2021 23:08

My friends dad lost about 5 stone in his mid sixties. Not too late!

Oneweekleft · 05/02/2021 23:09

Its just a case of eating a bit less every day when you think about it. Overtime then the weight will come off whatever age you are.

VestaTilley · 05/02/2021 23:21

No, and if you can’t exercise you can do it just by cutting your food intake. Honestly, you can totally do this.

Cut out sugary drinks, crisps, cake, biscuits and chocolate and see how you get on. You’ll lose pounds and be amazed, which will spur you on. Don’t replace the snacks with bigger portions though, and make sure your meals are healthy and balanced- no fried foods/chips.

Remember- it’s normal to feel a bit hungry if you’re dieting. Don’t do fads, fasting, or sugar free snacks in between meals.

If you can walk briskly for half an hour or more a day that will also help. I’ve lost 1.5 stone and kept it off consistently by eating the following:

Breakfast: small bowl of porridge with teaspoon of honey or 2 weetabix with honey and semi skimmed milk.

Snack at 10.30am: banana

Lunch: salad with hard boiled eggs or ham or chicken, some boiled potatoes or cold cooked rice if you need filling up

Snack: apple or yoghurt

Dinner: poached salmon fillet, broccoli, spinach, boiled potatoes

You will lose stones. Stick to it, even when it’s hard and you’re hungry. Don’t have chocolate or crisps where you can reach them. Walk all local journeys.

Good luck!

^ this. Plus my mum has lost 3 stone in her 70s after about 30 years of being overweight.

I’ve got serious about my health and lost 18 pounds since Xmas by eating healthily (mostly 1400-1500 cals a day), and doing 10k steps daily.

I think it’s a great time to do it: and easier now than eg in 50s. You will probably find the 1st couple of stone come off pretty easily and it will make a huge difference to your health. Lots of supportive threads on the weight loss board.

CoRhona · 06/02/2021 13:37

I am older than you, heavier than you and am doing the 5:2 diet.

It's never too late Flowers
