Self funding Adolescent psychiatrist

Not really an AIBU, but not sure where to post for most traffic.
I need recommendations for a private adolescent psychiatrist.
Child has ASD, we're on our 3rd CAMHS referral since the age of 12- she's 15 now. History of self harm, suicidal ideation, anxiety, low mood)
Previous CAMHS referrals have been rejected due to her having ASD ( because her difficulties are allegedly an inevitable part of her autism).
She has asked our GP and paediatrician about medication. After trying various therapies over the years, I now agree with her that medication might be the way to go.
Can anybody recommend a private psychiatrist?

Is there a neurodevelopmental camhs team near you?

Anothermother3 · 05/02/2021 23:21

Sorry that might not be the right way to put it as not everywhere has them but the psychiatrists that work in these teams will be a lot less ignorant.

I would also be looking for a psychotherapist to go alongside - open ended and integrative or person centred. Look on UKCP

If you are located in London I would recommend Dr Carina Eriksen for therapy as she's a psychologist but does work with Psychiatrsists as well so that way you can target all bases

Where do you live?

@Anothermother3
I don't think there is a CAMHS neurodevelopmental team here.

@jendifer She gets psychotherapy at school. She has a good relationship with her, so we'll carry on with that.

We’ve started talking to a psychologist about ASD DD with a view to getting therapy. I don’t find CAMHS helpful at all. They don’t offer support unless your child is borderline suicidal. You have to have an EHCP to get support, which could include therapy if the ASD Psych advises. The CAMHS psychiatrist just monitors the effect of medication and can refer if things are desperate (borderline suicidal). He only suggested support once we indicated we could pay. SLT for social skills and psychologist for therapy and managing emotions.

A private psychiatrist may offer more support and better signposting but it’s hugely expensive. We had a one off appointment with the Effra clinic in central London and found them helpful, for a second opinion on treatment options after ADHD diagnosis. If you’re considering antidepressants this may be the way to go as they’ll better understand how autism can affect the medicine, unlike a GP.

As an adult, the psychiatrist for ADHD was a lot more helpful regarding signposting and talking through issues to find solutions. So DH got better support than DD. It also depends where you live sadly.
