Have food prices gone up?

Desperado40 · 05/02/2021 06:59

AIBU to think that food prices have gone up a lot since Christmas? I was shocked how much I had to pay for the last two big shops. I think I will have to start cutting down on amy non essential treats and meal plan better for much cheaper options a few times a week. Has anyone else noticed the price hikes this year?

Yes, I book an online shop by just adding a previous order to the trolley and amending it nearer the time. I’ve noticed the difference in cost - it’s definitely more expensive. The same products cost around £10 more. (Previously £80/£90 a shop.)

PersonaNonGarter · 05/02/2021 07:10

They have. There’s a huge global crisis in shipping containers that’s been building since the end of the first lockdowns.

Demand spiked as people came out of the first lockdown. Prices for containers have risen insanely since about October last year. Think £2k per sailing to £10k per sailing. And now that cost is getting passed onto the consumer.

In addition, empty containers (which used to get shipped back from West to East) are being left at ports and not collected in the usual way so ports are getting very snarled up and everything is taking longer. More expense.

It’s a big problem.

My big shop yesterday definitely did cost more and I didn't buy any particularly expensive items.

Aprilx · 05/02/2021 07:22

Haven’t noticed any difference.

TwirpingBird · 05/02/2021 07:51

Yup. I noticed a rise of about £15 a week in morrisons online, then went back to aldi last week and it did go down but there is still an increase somewhere. I think it may be fruit and veg.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 05/02/2021 07:56

Of course

we are lucky enough that we see the effect of the pandemic
and Brexit!

You can't say anything without being accused of scaremongering, but with prices going up and the obvious need to finance the economic catastrophe that is covid, if you are not part of the few industries which boomed in the pandemic - and there are a few - life is going to be a bit tighter...

borntobequiet · 05/02/2021 07:56

Covid and Brexit. It’ll get worse.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/02/2021 08:20

I thought my shop was about £10 more than usual. I didn't buy any fruit and veg. because I get a box delivered separately (the veg box was more 'wintery' with mainly local produce but that's OK). I looked at a Free Range chicken but it seemed about twice the price so I didn't get it. I won't buy non-free range or imported meat so it's a meat-free week for me. I bought a bottle of wine but it must have been small marks ups generally that made the increase.

Love2cycle · 05/02/2021 08:27

My local butcher advised me against buying lamb at the moment as the price has rocketed. They've also stopped any special offers they normally do as price has gone up generally for meat.

TinyCake · 05/02/2021 08:32

Yes, I've had to stop relying on my usual go to recipes and try and find cheaper alternatives.

TheSoapyFrog · 05/02/2021 08:33

I'd say so. I'm spending about £30-40 a week more since last May in between prices going up and the kids being at home so often.

Standrewsschool · 05/02/2021 08:34

Yes, I’ve noticed with fresh meat especially.

However, some foods such as own-brand Shreddies and bleach are still lower than they were a year ago.

SpookyCookyMammaBear · 05/02/2021 08:37

Yes it's fruit and veg mainly I have personally seen it on, and a limited supply too.

rawalpindithelabrador · 05/02/2021 08:38

YES! Brexit. But the Brexiters will tell you that's not so. Energy price cap lifted, too. Sunlit uplands and unicorns and all.

DHdweller · 05/02/2021 08:40

Haven’t noticed to be honest.

Iwantacookie · 05/02/2021 08:41

Its definitely gone up but but it's what I expected with brexit.

user1493413286 · 05/02/2021 08:42

Yes I’ve noticed a difference

IgnoranceIsStrength · 05/02/2021 08:44

Ours has gone up at least £10/20 a week and our consumption hasnt really increased as DC always had packed lunches and I always had leftovers and batch cooked lunches. It is definitely small increases on everything overall

EuroTrashed · 05/02/2021 08:49

A 500g bag of pasta is currently £2.09 on Ocado. Obviously I’m buying at the coop where it’s just over half that. (& yup I’m sure it’s still 49p in Lidl but I’m not going to stand outside in a COVID hotspot in a queue to get in)

Flev · 05/02/2021 08:53

Ours has gone from about £50-£60 per week to about £70 per week, so a pretty hefty increase - its the equivalent of doing one extra weekly shop a month. Unfortunately it's both meat and veg that seem to have increased, so adding in extra veggie meals is having less impact than usual on our spend.

Ch3rish · 05/02/2021 08:56

Have you not shopped for the past 10 months Grin

Food prices have been going up for ages. It's not something anyone can be unreasonable about it's simply a fact.

Not every single item of course but a significant number of things are more expensive than they were at this time last year

OlympicProcrastinator · 05/02/2021 08:58

I shop in Aldi’s and buy their own brands and a farm shop with local stuff and I haven’t seen a price increase. I think it depends where and how you shop.

50shadesoflunacy · 05/02/2021 09:00

I shop in Aldi and their prices have definitely gone up. Chickens are up by 30p, Yorkshire tea has gone up and Hovis wholemeal. I haven't memorised any other prices.

I shop in aldi too and loads of things have gone up, it depends what you buy rather than which shop you use. Unless you have a special aldi that's held all their prices and in that case I want to know where it is Grin

Finding it particularly difficult to afford fish at the moment, unless it's processed and covered in breadcrumbs. Or mackerel, which is okay until you choke on a bone. Fresh fillets of anything are super pricey now. It would cost about £8 for two packs of fish fillets these days.
