That children are placed in ability groups regardless of age so that everyone gets a fairer chance at catching up on learning

Aside from the points already raised, it would be a total nightmare to organise in terms of funding and longer term financial planning. Schools operate on the assumption that all year groups are roughly equal in size and therefore funding will be stable from one year to the next. Obviously there is fluctuation particularly in small schools but generally you know about this in advance. And when there’s too much fluctuation it’s a nightmare because schools may need to lay off teachers / reduce hours, or recruit more staff with no guarantee of the chance of long term employment. Timetabling, resourcing and curriculum planning would also be hard.

If a school is set up for 100 kids per year group and suddenly there are 150 kids in Year 9, that will create all kinds of logistical nightmares. ‘Balancing it out’ with a mini cohort of 50 in Year 10 wouldn’t be a balance, just another logistical nightmare...

I can see the appeal of your idea but socially and practically it just wouldn’t work.

The evidence shows that ability groups can be very detrimental to progress, particularly of middle and lower ability pupils.

This. Over and over and over again,
