To think that you’re evening meal is called ‘tea’ not ‘dinner’?!

Biscoffaddict · 04/02/2021 16:33

I see so many posters on here referring to their evening mea, as ‘dinner’, but in real life I’ve never met anyone who does this and it’s always ‘tea’. It always has been tea. My parents call it tea, my grandparents called it tea, my friends call it tea, my work colleagues call it tea etc. ‘Dinner’ is the meal you have in the middle of the day and that’s why school dinner ladies, are called dinner ladies!

I don’t know but I find it quite irrationally annoying! Surely I’m not alone?!

t's a supper here in Ireland as well, you can get all kinds Fish Supper, Chicken Supper, Batter Sausage Supper etc

It is? Where are you in Ireland? I'm in Dublin and have honestly never seen that. Or heard anyone here call dinner supper tbh.

AryaStarkWolf · 05/02/2021 15:04

Chippy tea and chipper also sound childish
I cant bear slang from adults

No slang words ever? It makes the world more colourful imo........call me childish :p

Bluesheep8 · 05/02/2021 15:04

Tea, is hot drink made from leaves.

Or bags.

@x2boys

Words have different meaning ,s though *@Cokie3* don't they ,I would say Coke was a fizzy pop ,other,s may attribute it to an illegal substance they snort ,as for hot drinks made from leaves I would call it a brew ,you call it Tea 🤷
@x2boys Yeah I have to admit when I picked my username that same people may have thought of the illegal substance, but it's really the soda coca cola my nick is from. I wish we could have avatars, I've got a lovely gif of a bubbly glass of coke I could have used.
Bluesheep8 · 05/02/2021 15:05

Mind you, I refer to the evening meal as tea so what do I know? Grin

AryaStarkWolf · 05/02/2021 15:05

Oh I didn't mean we called dinner Supper, I mean in the chipper you would get a supper as a meal deal (I'm confusing myself now)

Oh that explains it, you're a law onto yourselves down there...bai Grin

Would probably just be a snackbox or a meal deal up here, I think. Although some are getting notions now and branding their meals things like 'The Picante'.

Why? It must be exhausting having to speak formally all the time.
Don't you ever use regional terms or phases when speaking?

Regional accents and dialects are wonderful and should be celebrated - not called childish or common

@AryaStarkWolf But isn't the word supper added on a bit superfluous? Is there such a thing as Fish Breakfast, Chicken Breakfast, Batter Sausage Breakfast?

If we're getting fish and chips or a burger or whatever for dinner, we just say takeaway.

Cokie3 · 05/02/2021 15:13

@IntermittentParps

Why would you have a lunch box and lunch time if the midday meal was dinner?

Well, in some areas and mileux it's called a snap box (or is it snap tin...?) And there are probably other variations too.

London DH when visiting my hometown was totally confused the first time he asked for fish in the chippy and was asked if he wanted a supper.
Reminds me of when I moved from Glasgow to London and went in a Greggs. I asked for a tuna Big Softie and I thought they were going to call the police Grin

Snap box? Never heard of that. That's interesting.

It's snack box in Australia.

AryaStarkWolf · 05/02/2021 15:15

It would be a snack box if it was Southern Fried Chicken but roast chicken breast and chips or basically anything battered with chips would be suppers and you would choose either mushy peas or curry sauce with it as well

Picante? Fierce posh up there in Dublin Grin

Tuscadero · 05/02/2021 15:15

I first encountered fish suppers and sausage suppers and king rib suppers and all the other chip shop suppers when I lived in Glasgow. There's no point people trying to point out why regional phrases don't make sense. They're part of the local dialect.

Cokie3 · 05/02/2021 15:17

I do like reading all the different language variations on here. It's interesting reading about different cultural dialects and habits.

AryaStarkWolf · 05/02/2021 15:19

I think I'm confusing everyone now (myself included) I mean that's what they're called in the actual Chipper/Chippy/Fish & Chip Shop not what I would say if I was announcing that's what we were going to do for dinner. I was replying to someone else about what meal deals are called in certain places. If I was asked What will we do for dinner tonight I would say - Lets go to the Chipper

MolyHolyGuacamole · 05/02/2021 15:20

Tea is a hot drink ☕️

Supper means it comes with chips

Single fish, single sausage (although you actually get 2 battered sausages!), single pizza crunch - all without chips

Fish supper, sausage supper, pizza crunch supper - you get the item plus chips

AryaStarkWolf · 05/02/2021 15:21

Sorry my last post was @Cokie3

Ah I getcha, yeah. I think a lot of chippers are gentrifying up here now. It's all rosemary salt and unreadable font on menus Grin

Also I think my question about the suppers has totally confused the thread!

Tuscadero · 05/02/2021 15:26

I really want some chip shop chips now.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 05/02/2021 15:29

I don't believe anyone saying they don't know anyone who says 'tea' as the evening meal though. It may be regional but people move!
