To think that you’re evening meal is called ‘tea’ not ‘dinner’?!

I see so many posters on here referring to their evening mea, as ‘dinner’, but in real life I’ve never met anyone who does this and it’s always ‘tea’. It always has been tea. My parents call it tea, my grandparents called it tea, my friends call it tea, my work colleagues call it tea etc. ‘Dinner’ is the meal you have in the middle of the day and that’s why school dinner ladies, are called dinner ladies!

I don’t know but I find it quite irrationally annoying! Surely I’m not alone?!

It depends where you live.

KatyClaire · 04/02/2021 16:34

It’s a regional and / or class difference. Neither is right nor wrong.

TankGirl97 · 04/02/2021 16:34

Depends where you're from!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 04/02/2021 16:35

Middle of the day meal is lunch.

LaceyBetty · 04/02/2021 16:35

No one I know calls it tea.

MrsPerfect12 · 04/02/2021 16:36

Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper. Afternoon and supper are snacks.

PicsInRed · 04/02/2021 16:36

That title has everything.

This must be a wind up? 🤣

SachaStark · 04/02/2021 16:36

We use both.

So long as it’s not called “supper”, which is properly insufferable.

dementedpixie · 04/02/2021 16:36

There are many threads pointing out regional differences in what people call their meals.

What start another thread about it??

ErickBroch · 04/02/2021 16:36

literally regional differences. who cares? I have never met anyone who calls it 'tea' but I also can appreciate that some people do. Wild concept Grin

Freshprincess · 04/02/2021 16:36

Are you in the north? It’s a regional thing
Midday meal - usually day lunch but use dinner time and dinner ladies
Evening meal - at home its tea. Out in a restaurant it’s dinner, unless it’s very early evening with the DCs.

ProfessorInkling · 04/02/2021 16:37

When do you eat lunch?

Notimeforaname · 04/02/2021 16:37

Nope. Breakfast in morning..lunch in afternoon..dinner in evening.
'Tea' is just a cup of tea here.

Beamur · 04/02/2021 16:37

Perfectly reasonable for people to call meals different things. There's a lot of regional differences.
Fwiw I call my evening meal dinner and my midday meal lunch. Tea for me is a hot drink or a sort of posh sandwich/cake do.
But I know lots of people who call their evening meal tea. Can't say it bothers me either way.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/02/2021 16:37

It’s regional.

Don’t worry I am sure there will be a class based bun fight over tea/afternoon tea /high tea /dinner /supper in due course.

ChristOnAPeloton · 04/02/2021 16:37

Lunch in the day, and dinner in the evening here.

I don’t mind cooked school meals being referred to as dinner, but never ever a sandwich at midday.

Biscoffaddict · 04/02/2021 16:37

@PicsInRed

That title has everything.

This must be a wind up? 🤣

Why would it be a wind up?

Bet you call it ‘dinner’ don’t you?😉

OP posts:
Notimeforaname · 04/02/2021 16:37

So you dont even have lunch op?.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 04/02/2021 16:38

Surely this thread is a wind up posted by MNHQ?
Op is right about it being tea, though 🤷‍♀️

Notimeforaname · 04/02/2021 16:38

*Ever have 'lunch'

Atrixie · 04/02/2021 16:38

I can’t bear people calling it tea, sets my teeth on edge. It’s dinner. Regional difference but i have never heard anyone southern calling the evening meal tea. I think it’s also a bit of a class thing too

Gatekeeper · 04/02/2021 16:38

I always call it tea and I usually have it 5.30 ish which appears to be a no-no on Mumsnet

luxxlisbon · 04/02/2021 16:38

Obviously this depends on where you live.

The only people I know who call it 'tea' are the notherners I work with.

Blabla81 · 04/02/2021 16:38

Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Tea is what I drink.

LittleBoPeep95 · 04/02/2021 16:38

My partner and I were just talking about this yesterday, it's breakfast, dinner, and tea. I dont know anyone that calls tea dinner. We are in the North east if that makes any difference!
