To consider a heated throw instead of the heating on…

Hi everyone,

Full-time home worker here, and I'm looking at heated throws.

I feel like I have the heating on so much at the moment, and I wondered if this is a viable solution for my office, so that I don't need to run the heating as much.

Does anybody have any experience of them?

Do they make a difference?

Also are there any recommended brands

This thread is slightly old now so some of the suggestions may be out of stock, but if you’ve landed here looking for cosy heated blankets, we’ve recently updated our best heated throw page with loads of great options that have been tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

I've got the argos one and it's brilliant for working in a cold loft room. You just unplug the cable to wash it.

Bookwords · 04/02/2021 19:31

This is a fabulous idea! Thanks all!

PoirotsMissLemon · 04/02/2021 19:32

We have one each and wouldn’t be without them. Wash fine ime (dreamland relaxwell)

scottgirl · 04/02/2021 19:37

We have a Dreamland Faux Fur one and it looks brand new after being machine washed and tumble dried. Well worth buying, it's so lovely.

FuzzyPuffling · 04/02/2021 19:47

I've got the Dreamland one. Fabulous.
I say"I"...the cat thinks it is hers.

zigzagbetty · 04/02/2021 19:57

Ooh just ordered one from amazon! I didn't know I needed one until I read this thread!

edwinbear · 04/02/2021 20:01

When we go back into the office, I’ll be taking mine in with me! My best lockdown purchase by far Grin

BlueTimes · 04/02/2021 20:03

I love mine and it disconnects to be easy to wash.

If you get cold hands whilst wfh, I can also recommend fingerless gloves that plug into your computer’s usb.

Bookwords · 04/02/2021 20:12

@FuzzyPuffling I think it's the cats and you think it's yours! Just saying!

Movinghouse2015 · 04/02/2021 20:15

Got one recently online for DD from Aldi, think it was £35 and free delivery!

She absolutely loves it!

Why would you do that? It’s so bad for your health. The recommended indoor daily temperature is 18-21 degrees. Anything below that and you could start to develop conditions caused by cold temperatures. Please do some research before you buy a blanket.

I don’t understand this countries obsession with saving a few pounds on heating every month and I’m not talking about the ones who genuinely can’t afford it before you all start.

iamyourequal · 04/02/2021 20:21

What is wrong with a hot water bottle (from about £4.99)...or is it time for me to get back on my ark? Smile

Bookwords · 04/02/2021 20:27

How would a hot water bottle keep your whole body warm @iamyourequal, ok under a duvet to warm your feet maybe.

gavisconismyfriend · 04/02/2021 20:28

I have one, it is amazing!

iamyourequal · 04/02/2021 20:34

@Bookwords. I work from home and am often freezing after a while sitting all the time. So I fill a hot water bottle. I then put a blanket opened out on my desk chair, sit down with the water bottle and wrap blanket over my lap. By moving water bottle from my lower back to my lap and back again I stay warm for several hours. I promise you it works at keeping you warm all over, not just the exact location of the bottle.

My house doesn't have heating apart from a gas fire downstairs so it will be worth it for me. Our house is never 18 to 21 and we don't suffer with anything
SirenSays · 04/02/2021 20:34

The blankets are lovely, I have three now, after the dog and DH commandeerd the first two.
Isn't the 18-21 range just the most efficient temp for your boiler? I didn't think it was to do with health, though I have read that turning it down to 15-17 degrees for a couple hours can help you lose weight.

mygenericusername · 04/02/2021 21:08

@SirenSays No it is a recommendation made by the WHO.

I don’t care what you do OP. Get a blanket and turn your heating off day and night if you want but anything below 18c increases the risk of respirate disease among other things.

Clicks link from random source. There are hundreds of them www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz/2008/06/18/cold-houses-and-impact-on-health/

mygenericusername · 04/02/2021 21:10

Respiratory Not respirate obviously

DaphneDuBois · 04/02/2021 22:24

There are no words for how much I love my Dreamland one! Honestly, pretty much the best thing I’ve ever bought! I’m under it constantly, working, watching tv on the sofa, reading..,

Skyliner001 · 05/02/2021 08:40

Our house tends to be about 17/18/19c once it's heated up. It goes down overnight 💚 Thanks ladies, I'm thinking the dreamland one seems like a good bet
