But that actually, it was the british public who gave all the money.

We are awesome too!

TeaPiglet · 03/02/2021 16:21

Personally I think it's the press doing it perhaps to comfort his family but the family statement acknowledged the public and that we as a whole made his last year of life extraordinary.

borageforager · 03/02/2021 16:23

And it was the government that underfunded the NHS so that it requires charity.

TeaPiglet · 03/02/2021 16:28

@borageforager yep but they have given themselves a good wage still so we should be grateful eh? 🙈 Definitely need a reform of sorts when things are more stable

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 03/02/2021 16:37

Why now? Why have you chosen now to demand a pat on the back for this? Do you really hate the nation feeling fondness for a war hero who kickstarted a huge fund raising campaign for the NHS? Good grief. I'm so glad I'm not like you. The British public repeatedly vote for Tory underfunding of the NHS and other public services and the absolutely catastrophic way they've handled this covid crisis. What the fuck is awesome about that?

CoRhona · 03/02/2021 16:44

What a bloody weird thread. The man was amazing. Let it go.

Annabell80 · 03/02/2021 16:47

Yes we donated the money but we wouldn't have done if he hadn't done anything.

Glitterblue · 03/02/2021 16:49

He was amazing, he was the one who put the work in, and the one who started it all.

Genderwitched · 03/02/2021 16:52

Yeah, lets just thank every single person in the world for being great. we might as well not bother.

SoupDragon · 03/02/2021 16:57

And would you have donated if he had done nothing?
ThatsnotmyBorishishairistoneat · 03/02/2021 16:59

Pretty mean spirited thread

Newrumpus · 03/02/2021 17:03

Loads of these Tom threads are weird. And is miserablist.

Some people can’t acknowledge his achievement without bizarre blaming of others.

ssd · 03/02/2021 17:04

@borageforager

Absolutely, now Johnson is cashing in on the feel good factor Captain Tom produced.
Londonmummy66 · 03/02/2021 17:17

Quite a mean thread OP but I suspect that Sir Tom would have agreed with you. I think that was the key to his popularity - he was clearly an amazing man who had lived life to the full but who was a very modest and unassuming person. Sadly I'm not sure that they make them like that any more.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 03/02/2021 17:21

What the absolute fuck is it with people at the minute.

"Oh look there's someone who died getting some attention, what about meeeeee?"

"Oh look a group of people are getting a discount in shops, what about meeeeeee?"

"Oh look someone is struggling a bit, what about my struggles which are soooo much worse"

Has society become so fucking self indulgent that we can't stand to see a war veteran, who raised 10s of millions for charity getting a bit of news time after his death.

Markies · 03/02/2021 17:23

@StephenBelafonte I will go and clap for you tonight 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

visitorfromtheplanetzog · 03/02/2021 17:25

What the absolute fuck is it with people at the minute

Quite.

iklboo · 03/02/2021 17:32

And what have you done to highlight issues and raise millions? Nasty post.

Thedogscollar · 03/02/2021 17:37

Yet another shitty unnecessary post about Sir Tom.
What made you come up with this thought OP?? Today of all days.
Pathetic and cruel.

ejhhhhh · 03/02/2021 17:43

Well I don't like being told by Boris Johnson to clap for the NHS and carers, he's done f all for them quite frankly. As the PM (and a member of the government that's been in power for over a decade) he's ultimately responsible for the conditions that they're working under and he pays their wages. But I can still feel appreciation for Captain Tom and what he did, I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. I mean it's galling that BJ has hijacked it, Captain Tom was raising money for the NHS, to help those working within it who are struggling. That's the responsibility of the government, not a 100 year old war veteran, if anything his actions just shame the government. But Captain Tom did a good thing, a bit of national good will towards someone who did some good does no harm at all.

happyjack12 · 03/02/2021 17:47

wow, WELL DONE OP

hope you feel better now

Kinneddar · 03/02/2021 17:50

Wow OP aren't you charmer. Completely understand necessary & rather nasty thread

itsgettingweird · 03/02/2021 17:59

We all know how these things happen.

I actually really liked Captain Tom. He was very funny and great to listen to. And I'm glad we got that.

But it was made as big because of SM. So SM does have its place and can help to raise money but Captain Tom didn't set out to raise millions because of the underfunded nhs. He set out to raise an amount because he'd received the fantastic care our nhs staff offer.

It's kinda a whole circle of things and yes, I agree, the British people - well globally actually - did really well getting behind him and supporting the charity.

I think the fact he could talk well and was captivating helped.
