Non-Justified Text - Is it just me?

Mochudubh · 03/02/2021 15:47

I was trying to read this on another thread but the text isn't fully justified and I think it looks sloppy and unprofessional. I was taught to always justify text as it looks more professional, but I am old.

I'd like to enable voting but can't see how to.

I'm fully aware that this is not the most pressing issue of the day but it annoys the hell out of me anyway.

YANBU

Chouetted · 03/02/2021 15:52

Oddly, I was taught that fully-justified text is harder to read.

UrAWizHarry · 03/02/2021 15:55

Fully justified text is harder to read with all the random padding and just looks stupid. Thankfully it seems to be dying out.

PawPawNoodle · 03/02/2021 16:00

Justified text is harder to read and very formal. It's customary to use left alignment if writing something that is intended to be 'approachable'.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 03/02/2021 16:19

I prefer justified and I always used to justify, however recently I was told to not do so anymore because of accessibility reasons. I think it is that some people with either dyslexia or dospraxia struggle with reading it? Or am I entirely confusing that

Mochudubh · 03/02/2021 16:20

OK, arse handed to me.

I still think it looks shit. I will die on this hill. Grin.

Justified all the way! Left hand alignment and Times New Roman look old fashioned.

Sadly I was contemplating this last night in bed! 😂

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/02/2021 16:23

Left and Right justification is harder to read because you get odd word spacing. You can also end up with strange 'rivers' through the text due to the unusual word spacing.

inquietant · 03/02/2021 16:23

I prefer unjustified too, much faster to read.

BlackForestCake · 03/02/2021 16:32

Justified type is absolutely fine if you use software that is capable of doing it properly (i.e. not Word).

MyKingdomForACaramel · 03/02/2021 16:38

Am going to save this thread as I have this argument a lot with clients who want justified text (and it looks shit).

steff13 · 03/02/2021 16:46

I do legal writing for work and we use left-aligned text.

Whitney168 · 03/02/2021 16:47

YABU, as others have said justified text is proven to be much harder to read. Unjustified all the way ...

EggysMom · 03/02/2021 16:58

Pretty sure full justification goes against accessibility guidelines. Personally I hate the uneven spacing it generates.

prettybird · 03/02/2021 17:06

@Chouetted

Oddly, I was taught that fully-justified text is harder to read.
I was taught this too when I worked as a management consultant for a Big Six consultancy firm.

So YABU Wink

gogogogo1 · 03/02/2021 17:10

Totally agree with you, OP, it looks shit!

shitinmyhandsandclap · 03/02/2021 17:15

Nope, not a fan of justified and our company default is unjustified

Embroideredstars · 03/02/2021 18:08

I'll die on that hill with you op!

Catlover77 · 03/02/2021 20:39

I’ll die with you too - unjustified looks scruffy

BidensWingWoman · 03/02/2021 21:04

I'm not aware of any word processor that does a good job of justifying text. Even in the world of publishing, where it is probably at it's most advanced, it is checked manually as it's not perfect.

So while I agree that beautifully justified text is a wonderful thing, I would rather for most purposes, text be left aligned because it's rarely done well. Outside publishing, that is.
