To want to see my Excel columns?

FlamedToACrisp · 02/02/2021 17:35

I can't figure out how to make the wording in all my columns visible simultaneously, like it is in an ordinary table. What should I do to fix it?

To want to see my Excel columns?

You either need to make the columns wider or format the cells to 'merge' (which will be better)

Lunariagal · 02/02/2021 17:37

Wrap the text?
Right mouse click on the cell, select format cells and its in there somewhere

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 02/02/2021 17:37

Double click at the top of the col where the letter is and it will expand to the longest think in it

minchinfin · 02/02/2021 17:38

autosize the columns - click on the arrow top left to select everything, then click on one of the column divider lines

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/02/2021 17:38

Wrap text.

listsandbudgets · 02/02/2021 17:38

I think if you right click on the cell and select format, theres an option to wrap the words

so they go down
line by line
like this
in the cell
is that what
you wanted to know?

Or you can set the whole column to word wrap (think that's what its called years since I've used excel)

Merryoldgoat · 02/02/2021 17:38

Wrap the text - don’t ‘merge’

Merged cells are the devil.

Veenah · 02/02/2021 17:39

Select the cells you want to fix and click "wrap text" - I think it's under Formatting

AViewFromTheWindows · 02/02/2021 17:39

Agree, wrap the text.
Merge cells are shit.

littleloopylou · 02/02/2021 17:39

just another one to say DO NOT MERGE.

Definitely wrap text

minchinfin · 02/02/2021 17:39

this will make every column as wide as it needs to be to show all the writing in it - as pp said you may need to wrap text if thats too wide

ZooeyS · 02/02/2021 17:39

Exactly what @meryoldgoat said - sorry OP, I was working on a spreadsheet and browsing mumsnet at the same time Blush

listsandbudgets · 02/02/2021 17:40

Agree, wrap don't merge

minchinfin · 02/02/2021 17:40

yes, avoid merge, its hideous

SlippersForFlippers · 02/02/2021 17:41

Make the cells wider if you want it all on one line but if you have a long sentence it will make the table wide.

Wrap the text and it will be in lines in the cell.

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/02/2021 17:43

Yes, wrap. Highlight the cells you want to deal with, select Format cells/alignment. Then select vertical alignment to top and tick the wrap text box.

StrangerHereMyself · 02/02/2021 17:43

WRAP NOT MERGE!

unless it’s a sheet which you’re using as a one-off for display purposes and will never ever want to use or copy again I guess.

FlamedToACrisp · 02/02/2021 17:49

Wow! Thank you all for the super-quick responses! Right, I'm off to try merging (just kidding!) I will try WRAPPING the text. Smile

I'm very happy because I thought you were going to say, "Tough luck - Excel doesn't do that!"

My excel columns concealed
Words that I wanted revealed
I asked on mumsnet
They said to wrap text
And now my spreadsheet's ideal

Rhubarbcrumblerules · 02/02/2021 17:57

After wrapping you may need to make the row deeper to see all the text

victopai · 02/02/2021 17:59

If you don't want the text wrapped and would prefer it in a straight line. You can select the cells you want the text to spread over. Right click. Format. Then alignment tab. Centre across selection. This looks like merge. But does not act like a merge and the cells work independently.

cava Grin

I love a MN excel thread.

IliveonCoffee · 02/02/2021 18:07

@victopai

Oh I need this one! For headers of tables. Totally playing with this tomorrow

DearPrudence · 02/02/2021 18:11

OP did you WRAP THE TEXT?
