Do you think it is unfair the amount of criticism influences/social media and content representatives get? (pre and during the covid pandemic)

There has been a massive backlash in those who are currently travelling in Dubai/Maldives and posting photographs on social media - I have seen a lot of hate that has been generated - do you think it is a fair response?

Before covid, it seemed that many influencers were ashamed to admit what they did as a living as there is a negative stigma.

Not a journalist - interested in your thoughts and experiences!!!

'It's a Faustian pact. That's what it boils down to.'

Krook · 02/02/2021 23:16

Oops posted to soon, wanted to say I agree, a Faustian pact.

I'm sure some of them occasionally do a bit of good but in general it's a non-job!

Emeraldshamrock · 02/02/2021 23:18

Anyone who flaunts the rules blatantly while they soak up the sun abroad deserves some criticisms. RO for example can't stand her
In general no i don't it is kind to troll anyone saying awful things from behind a screen.

Emeraldshamrock · 02/02/2021 23:24

I know two teenagers who are broke into the lifestyle through Only fans.
They seem to be living it up making a fortune selling nudes if only they knew how it can haunt them.
All the young teenagers look up to them.

For influencer read conman , conning folk to buy stuff they don’t need or can’t afford , anc half the time they are endorsing products they don’t even use

SatishTheCat · 03/02/2021 00:05

I hope this vapid shallow influencer culture dies and is replaced by something more meaningful

I got a bit annoyed today seeing that Stacey Solomon was in a studio having a photoshoot. During a pandemic. While we're in lockdown. Not exactly essential, is it.

ILikeToMoveItMoveItILikeToMove · 03/02/2021 05:32

I think they deserve the criticism for being tone deaf if nothing else flaunting their ‘lifestyles’ amidst a pandemic and many of them trying to flout the rules in one way or another.

I wonder how long this influencer phase will go on for? I think the same of the Z list reality show people who make money for having no discernible talent. I thought that would have died out by now but it seems to keep on going sadly 🥱

Gobbycop · 03/02/2021 09:35

Influencer = vacuous, workshy, freeloading cunt.

😂

Bang on.

Exhausteddog · 03/02/2021 10:31

I dont really follow anyone on insta or youtube but I'd be interested in the age demographic of the influencer and the influencee (if that's a word) When I think of an influencer i think of someone in their 20s, maybe early 30s....are there older ones? Will the current ones continue until they are 50, taking their followers with them...?

My teen DD asked for some expensive skincare for her birthday because she seen it recommended on insta or tik tok or wherever. She has typically teen skin, bless her, prone to outbreaks of spots. One of the products made her skin really rough and awful, so she stopped using it but I'm not convinced any of the other items are benefitting her skin, any more than a basic range from boots.
I wonder if teens and early 20s are more easily influenced than say someone in their 40s who has had time to develop their own opinions and sniff out BS see through the staged life and ominous claims being made?
That said Mrs Hinch seems to appeal to a wider audience who I imagine are older.

TakeTheCuntOutOfScunthorpe · 03/02/2021 10:37

It's fine to take "influencers" down a peg or two, more so when their behaviour warrants it.

As a job (which it really isn't) it is just a combination of advertising and prostitution. So basically just prostitution.

fairynick · 03/02/2021 10:41

I don’t think the individual influencers are too blame. I also think they’re easy targets because they’re generally young less educated women and document their lives a lot more.
I know someone who was over in Dubai a couple of weeks ago and said their hotel was full of men in “business trips” and maybe one or two influencers. They weren’t the only people doing it, but were the ones who got all the backlash.
I, personally, would find it easier and more appropriate to direct my anger at the UK and UAE governments for allowing “business” travel like this. They knew what they were doing and wanted the money from it.

Missing the point of the thread slightly, but what sort of a hellhole is Dubai? Sounds like Sodom and bloody Gomorrah.

hansgrueber · 03/02/2021 14:10

@Butchyrestingface

A few friends of mine are teachers and told me most of the children wanted to be youtubers/influencer when they grew up- I wonder if the bubble will burst!

It blows my mind that this is an aspiration children genuinely have for themselves. 🤯

Sadly that's not new, twenty years ago we had problems trying to get pupils. especially girls, to have some ambition beyond 'copping off with a footballer', the people they admired were usually those who had slept their way onto the front pages.
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/02/2021 14:36

do you think it is a fair response?

Yes, absolutely.
