Are capped at a pass. Dd has had extensions agreed for a couple of essays on Her access to nursing course.

No

She'll need to ask the college, but when I was studying, if it was agreed in advance for a legitimate reason (eg serious illness) then it was marked as normal. However if you just left it to late, then it would be capped. Did they mention anything when they agreed the extension?

SurvivalIsInsufficient · 02/02/2021 14:55

No-one here can tell you what one particular institution does. Some will, some won't. You have to ask them, not us!

MummytoCSJH · 02/02/2021 14:56

It's usually just resits which are capped if they're not covered under extenuating circumstances. Extension is just that, extra time to do the exact same piece, nothing more or less.

An extension given for a mitigating circumstance or for a learning difference are not capped to by knowledge.
What is the reason for the extension?

If a student fails an essay and resubmits, the mark on the second attempt can be capped.

Extensions, not usually

Resubs, sometimes.

If an extension is agreed then it will be treated like any other assessment submission. I work in academic registry in a uni and part of my remit is making decisions on extension requests.

In normal circumstances late assessments are capped but a lot of universities have changed their regulations in lockdown to avoid detriment to students. She should be fine.

Maybe your daughter should take responsibility for asking her teachers herself, rather than getting you involved? Or are you interfering?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 02/02/2021 15:00

I was at uni many many years ago now, but had extensions on two essays and graduated with a 2:1. I've no idea if things have changed though.

mindutopia · 02/02/2021 15:04

No, definitely not, we would treat a proper extension due to extenuating circumstances as like any other submitted assessment. There are instances where marks are capped at a pass though for our students. For example, if a student was accused of academic misconduct (plagiarism), we ask them to revise the essay and re-submit it, and then that essay mark would be capped at a pass. It would be very unfair to disadvantage students who had genuine circumstances why they couldn't submit on time.
