Positive for Covid can I leave

Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 11:56

I had a postive Covid case 2-3 weeks ago have been out of isolation for 9 days had to go to a and e on Sunday night they asked to do a Covid test I said I’ve just had Covid and the test can stay positive for 30 days even if you won’t be able to spread it or have it nurse agreed but took the test I’m now showing as positive. I’ve only left the flat once in the 9 days too get supplies and then for my daily walk where I don’t meet anyone. Would you still isolate even if you don’t have it

Yes, I went out the moment my self isolation was ended. I couldn't start lateral flow testing for 90 days after my positive PCR as apparently it will still test positive.

murbblurb · 02/02/2021 12:04

you can test positive for up to 90 days, but your isolation only lasts for 10 days from the first positive test, or from symptoms (info on gov.uk).

so yes, you are ok to go out, but like everyone else - behave as if you are infectious.

StripyHorse · 02/02/2021 12:07

Yes isolate. If you had remained in 100% of the time, and had no contact with anyone at all that's fine.

As it is, you may have caught it again at the shop.

Yes it could also be based on your previous infection but there is still a chance it's not.

Sorry, I know it's crap.

MatildaTheCat · 02/02/2021 12:10

No, it’s nonsense. I imagine that nhs staff do as a pp has said and simply don’t test when they return to work otherwise they would be off for weeks and weeks.

It’s just happened to my friend and he’s also in a quandary but all the guidance says you are not infectious and everyone is still expected to stick with the rules anyway.

Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 12:19

Thanks for the help it just sucks as nhs told me to stay at home

To be fair, you haven't been isolating if you have been out to shops for supplies. The rules are not not leave the house/garden during isolating as you could have passed it on to someone while getting supplies. You should have asked someone to get things for you or got an online delivery with instructions to leave at the door.

Sunshineandflipflops · 02/02/2021 12:53

You also shouldn't have been out walking.

Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 12:53

No I isolated for 11 days and then when I was allowed to leave my house I left for a daily walk and once for the shop

You wouldn't have 'caught it again', or if you had, you would be the first example of anyone having done so that was not a false positive first time round.

But then of course, your first positive could have been a false positive. So now you could be infectious where you were not before. And by going out you could be putting lives at risk. So yes, self isolate!

CutsOffCorners · 02/02/2021 12:57

FML people's lack of reading comprehension never fails to amaze me Confused

OP - covid tests should not be done again for 90 days after a positive test for this reason!

Sunshineandflipflops · 02/02/2021 12:59

Oh, ok, sorry my mistake. If you isolated for the complete amount of time you were told then I'd probably use my judgement as to going out now. Maybe stick to walks where you don't come into contact with anyone but not close to people in shops, etc until you get a negative result?

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 02/02/2021 13:03

You dont need to self isolate. Ring 119 and ask them to amend it on the records

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 02/02/2021 13:05

Unless you have new symptoms then you should self isolate for 10 days

Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 13:06

I rang 119 and they said I had to isolate

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 02/02/2021 13:10

It's bloody unlikely that OP had a false positive, was ill with covid symptoms which were actually something else, then immediately actually caught covid which she now has no symptoms of.

I would not self isolate in this situation

StripyHorse · 02/02/2021 13:16

I totally understand what OP says.
I also understand the official guidance.

If you test positive, or are in contact with someone who tests positive, after completing isolation then you must isolate for 10 days.

It might be unlikely that OP has caught it again but it is not impossible.

OP follow the advice given by 119.

Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 13:35

Thanks for the comments

Phoned 119 again lovely lady said I shouldn’t of been tested and I can get it over ridden by my gp if he thinks i won’t have Covid or the a and e ward can

OP posts:
slidingdrawers · 02/02/2021 13:45

Op, you are being given the round around as no one is taking your individual circumstances into account. As pp have pointed out, the advice is not to test within 90 days of a positive test. This is because an additional test in this timeframe can pick up fragments from the original virus. Unless you have new symptoms. You do not. The A&E test will have been routine, as per their guidance. It is not surprising this is positive (as explained above). You do not need to re-self isolate based on this test.

slidingdrawers · 02/02/2021 13:46

Cross posted with your most recent update.

Sweettea1 · 02/02/2021 13:57

@Sunshineandflipflops OP did isolate. Went shops once after isolated period was over.
I wouldn't isolate again everyone knows tests can remain positive. Obviously isolate if you get any symptoms.

Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 15:13

Will update once the doctor has phoned

OP posts:
Overwhelmed245 · 02/02/2021 18:25

Doctor hasn’t phoned although I was told a call today before 6.30 it won’t be until tomorrow now due to how busy they are 😭 actually in so much pain because of my condition had to go to a and e on Sunday with it so hopefully I do get a call tomorrow

OP posts:
Imapotato · 02/02/2021 18:35

I believe so. You can test positive for up to 90 days after covid. I’m out of isolation tomorrow. I belong to a covid study through work and they expect me to test positive. They have sent me a letter to quote to test and trace of they contact me due to testing positive again. Basically it states that so long as I don’t have symptoms I don’t have to isolate for a positive test.

You should be fine.
